Hey, that's fair. I asked if you were a masters 3, you called me a mix of ****, piss, and ***? (I guess?) I'm sure we're both proud.

This week was a complete waste. Couldn't get a decent nights sleep, and didn't really recover.

2 weeks off (though I cheated on the 2nd), followed by what turned out to be my 2nd highest TSS week of the year, with a ton of intensity -- in all, almost 3 hours of Z5 and above. I am sore all over!

Climbing is not my thing. Dirt is not my thing. Climbing and descending on dirt is definintely not my thing. But I had a blast. It's pricey because it's a fund raiser. Great people. Great time. My legs are trash.

slept in and missed Coffee Republic (50 something mile group ride with some climbs), so I went out and did something like 40 miles of tempo. Got home and tinkered with bikes:
-changed crankset on one bike
-put new zero offset seatpost on my Foil
-put -10 drop stem on my foil cause the head tube is a flipping pine tree (still thinking I may need a 58)
-stripped all the components off my Leopard
-ripped the cover off an SMP Pro to see if it would be usable without the ton-o padding (turns out it is)

I have a team ride tomorrow; 48 miles and an HC Climb adding up to 5800 feet with as poorly as I've felt this could end up very badly. My legs just haven't been recovering.

If you are not recovering by the 2nd day then you are doing too much.
I'll get back to this in a moment, ( family breakfast called )
It's difficult to comment without seeing a training plan but my guess is that you burn the candle too often.
Just as important as hard sessions there should also be soft sessions designed to recuperate. You can ride a 2 hour recoup. ride and keep your HR low and just spin. Off the bike recovery is also important.
But without a plan in view ???
As far as that team ride, if you are not recovered enough, then you are just going to bury yourself even further.
Do that too many times and your season will be over as your body will take control and refuse to bounce back.
I would decline on that ride or use it as a recovery ride, meaning stay within or below a 3 zone even though that means they're heading up the road. If it's too much then turn around and bag it. Go Home.
It's as much about knowing when to restrain yourself as to when to push it.
BTW if your resting pulse immediately after waking up is 10+ beats higher then you are not recovered and a change is in order for that day's training.

I have in the past, I'm being coached right now so not so much.
I had a really case of insomnia for a few nights. Outside of training I don't do much physical work.

Whelp I gotta let this overuse knee injury heal. It was a risk when I crammed as much training in as I did. Unfortunately my legs and heart are begging for more, and it was really working. I could have been ready to race with one more block.
Went for a spin this morning and it's irritated pretty good while riding. Gonna take a full week off and then build slower and just aim for next year instead of fall races.

Man that ride was brutal. Got spit out the back at about 4000 feet and had to go it alone. My legs felt great I was just out of my league.
Also, I'm not sure why 'doing hammer rides all week' is a bad thing. Granted, I'm an old man with a few leg injuries so I got a coach but there are plenty of people out there that do it. Many of them seem to get on podiums.

People who do hammer rides are strong, but only up to a certain point. Cycling is much more about versatility than putting your head down and hammering it out. It certainly didn't keep you in contact, so then something is missing.
Then again what Cats are your teammates ? If they are the same then you should be on the level to stay with them and not get dropped until the last couple hundred feet.
Don't know what your coach is telling you but climbing well is both about power to weight ratio as well as efficiency. Both mechanical and biomechanics. No better example of that then Miguel Indurain. Here was a big guy who could climb regardless of his size, he did sometimes get nailed by the colombians but more often than not everyone else was trying to stay in contact with Big Mig without blowing up.
Also how are your descending skills ? hopefully not like Wiggins. Being able to descend is a skill which seems to have been lost by the majority.
There you can make up great chunks of lost time or gain time.

what's hilarious is that if any of us were in a TdF level peloton in a descent we'd wet our pants.
I watched Andy Schleck scream down Sierra Rd at 40mph weaving through people walking, riding, walking dogs, etc. after the ToC. And he's a "bad" descender.
