IMO, there's a balance. preparing for the long-term is great, but often one needs to taste some measure of success in the nearer-term in order to have the motivation to keep going.
the types of base rides sometimes discussed have their place, but that place does not exist for all riders. one needs to know what they're doing and why, no matter the training plan.
recently cameron cogburn posted a pic of his garmin where he did a 6-hour zone 2 trainer ride--at 280 watts.
i thought the exchange between adam myerson and cogburn was interesting.

The training of strengths vs. weaknesses is something I'm mindful of, here. The short-duration high-intensity stuff is where my strength lies. I definitely need to do work on it to be competitive, but it responds well, and quickly, to training. Endurance, both for single events and for the whole season, are weaknesses, and I want to give them some attention. Without endurance, it doesn't matter how good my sprint and my anaerobic work capacity are, because my tank will be too empty to use them. And yeah, I want to give road races another shot. Wrecking myself with a zillion base hours is not the plan. Paying more attention to my weakness and trying to build a training plan that addresses it is the plan. That's a long-term goal, yes, but I do plan on being fast enough to shoot for some decent results.

I don't know who this Myerson person is, but he seems to be a big deal.

We'll be there. We will have returned from Spain 3 days before we are doing jet lag training.
Two years ago it was fringed climate training. They put the kids out at 7:30 AM and it was 25F. We don't have cloths for that in SoCal - if its below 50 - we don't ride.

The thing that is interesting about his advice is he actually spends a relatively smaller amount of time on the road and does lots of CX and MTB. So he's more an all-rounder, like the guy that spends 6 hours on the trainer. Sunday we were chatting at the crit about the roller races of the 80s when that was a big thing. Maybe roller racing should be brought back as a USAC event.

He's a 42 year old who rides for team Smart Stop - that use the best wheels made :-)

Anyway, the important thing about Myerson is much less which team he races on and much more his place in the U.S. racing community, and particularly the New England/Northeast racing community. Known for being very vocally anti-doping, for being a very smart racer and coach and running a very well-respected coaching company, Cycle-Smart. Not to mention opinionated and interesting in general.

I don't know the guy - I just did some research and I do follow Team Smart Stop because we share a wheel sponsor and if they don't break or sell all their stuff I get left overs. I expect you guys know where he's going, but as of Sunday USAC results:[TABLE="align: center"]

Well he'll be on SmartStop for road until the end of the contract year but he definitely raced cross in a Cyclesmart kit. Many riders have different road and cross sponsors. And he's racing for Astellas next year.

Hired a coach for the first time ever.
Did some testing, and have started structured training.
Aiming to get my Pro license on the MTB, and some podiums in the local 1/2 road scene, particularly a few local hill climb TTs.
My focus for the year is improving my 5 and 10min power, as those will be the biggest influence on success in most of the races I'll do. 5min is currently at 391w; want to gain another 15w or so. 10min was 351w in October; want to get comfortable doing reps (3 or 4) at 5.5w/kg. Currently 66kg. Dropping 2-3kg is very doable, and I'll see about that wattage. I think getting another few percent is doable. Marginal gains and all that.

DoK, good to see you back! Good luck with those goals!
Reminds me to mention that, as part of my continued drift from 33 purity, I'm also hoping to start doing some MTB racing next season and see how I like that.
Okay, yeah. I was wondering about that cause I thought I'd seen him in a Cycle-Smart kit but then on the results he's still listed as SmartStop. Thanks.

Almost 3 hours this morning, starting before dawn.
The wet roads made my clean bike sad, but at least it wasn't raining.
Ready for Base to be done, and it will be soon!

Did a 20min FTP test using trainerroad. Got FTP of 216 (3.09 w/kg, 228w for the 20 min test), I had it set at 207 (2.96 w/kg) 4 weeks ago when I first started. Yay progress
