I posted "both are not a NCAA Varsity Sport". How's this wording. At colleges where squash and cycling are not varsity sports they do not help you get accepted with lower grades and test scores. Cycling is a varsity sport at a few schools, as is Squash at a few (and better schools - no desire to define) You can check the Ivy Varsity sports here: Ivy League . Some of the Ivy sports are also NCAA Varsity sports and some are not.
And if you are after me on logic - I should have said neither are a NCAA sport, as not to allow the case where squash was and cycling wasn't. But I figured you knew what I meant. Its a forum, not a blog. I'll give you that my posts are not always well worded, but I think you may not be reading them or the context of the posts before them before reacting. I've got stuff on other screens that may distract me from the importance of my forum posts.

Sprints? This is a selection debate going on right now. I think many of the true RRs in SoCal do, as the RRs are hilly.

@Doge I will take all the free ewang I can get. I am in horrendous shape. However the orthopedist says my clavicle is fully healed and the pin is going to come out in the next 4-5 weeks. The hand is still healing. ROM is very good but still needs work. I've had issues with vertigo that have subsided recently but I'm following up on it next week with an MRI and two specialist visits. Tomorrow I'm going to ride with the club C group for a few hours. Nice and Fredly.

Unless its an all-uphill course, I don't think this is generally true.

i know Grumpy likes to trot out some stat about needing 5 w/kg to survive some climb or another, but still.

road races are still about racing smart and saving energy. Yes ftp matters more but it's not everything.

It depends on whether you want to make the selection or not. Grumpy is right on the money with that metric.

openers or something like that where you ride around aimlessly and sprint to random objects for a while

Ditto, probable difference is that I did it virtually on The Island. 2 sprints.

And 2 days ago went for a club ride. I got so shelled so hard so soon guys were looking back at me a bit concerned. It was basically during the warm up that I got redlined and as soon as they punched it my fuse got lit and bam I was outta there.

I would think that even most the hilly RRs around here probably come down to vo2 more than ftp, but I guess it's all interconnected anyway.

dudes. dudettes. seriously. I can't emphasize this enough. The debate on colleges and all that's been associated over the last few pages is complete here. You're welcome to carry it on in a more appropriate thread, but here it's ended.

basta. fini. done.

Climbing in races is VO2 for me, until I go off the back.

VO2 for me is max 250-260w. I was doing 400w on the recent club group ride in the warm up until I blew. This was basically in the warm up, as I was redlined and just starting to get dropped when they stopped to declare it was open season. I recovered while they announced that, the route, etc. I was off the back shortly after.

I have decent vo2 and relatively weak ftp, I can hang with the fast guys in a race unless there's a climb of more than about 6-7 minutes in which case I can't. I think that 6-7 minute time limit is different for different people but at some point a climb is long enough that you either have the ftp or you don't.

I basically have massive problems on any course where there's a climb longer than about 45 seconds.

On the other hand that endurance weight site says I should be almost 20 lbs lighter (to be 11% body fat) so now I have a different mindset on what I should weigh. I was thinking 5-8 lbs lighter would be good. Now I'm thinking 10-15 lbs lighter would be good, and 20 lbs would be very, very nice.

As I'm about 15-18 lbs lighter than last year it's a big thing.

Our Tuesday Night Worlds starts off with a 2 minute climb that people hammer up; I have to keep it about 400w to stay attached and that's holding wheels. Typically I get dropped, which puts me in the gruppo fred / cat 6 pack. I'm better on the 15 minute climb and pick off quite a few people but that first climb costs me. You get dropped from the lead pack early it doesn't really matter how good of a climber you are.

I am a member of the high VO2/FTP power ratio camp - I don't have the highest FTP (~4.0w/kg), but can rip the hell out of a 5min climb.

Finally managed to hang with the fast A ride today ^_^ I even had some left to contest the main sprint. 87km, 2:28:15, weighted avg pwr 173 (put down 1248w in the sprint). There were lots of long stretches where we were averaging over 40km/h. Yay!!

Three hours with two Freds. Flat to rolling at moderate speed. 155TSS but that was using my pre-crash FTP. It seemed harder. I felt pretty beat up in the shoulders and hand afterwards but the important thing is, three hours.

Sac River Ride. My Garmin was dead this morning (accidentally left it on all night), so of course that means I absolutely rode out of my skull this morning. Felt like I was riding with someone else's legs. Someone much fitter. I'm going to start doing this ride with my Garmin in my pocket. And racing too.

Nice to hear shovel.

I buried myself with another day of hill repeats. Goal of digging myself Into a massive hole:accomplished. Everything hurts. Even my lungs. How is that possible? Followed by moving intervals. 3 days of bourbon street intervals coming on tap.

Sac River Ride - B Group.

I took my share of the pulls, went off the front a few times, and took third in the final sprint. Fun ride. Afterwards I put in about 20 miles of cruising on the bike trail with a teammate. 60 miles, 2:45, 192 TSS.

Recovery...again. Not happy about it but my legs did not feel good. Planned a lot more but had to work at 5 am so didn't sleep well and still sore from my 250 TSS effort on Thursday.
