Summer is here! High temp was 114 yesterday. This morning's group ride contained heat, a small crash and the national crit champion. All before 7am!

You know, not for nothing but those low intensity rides are total zen moments for me. Even if you're having a ****ty day it feels like no chain, you barely have to look at your computer and can get some kickass thinking done.

Crit training today, was solo for a lap after I bridged a dead break, and recovered enough to finish near the front....about 80 showed and there was some sketchiness, had my first double bump where I had contact on both sides...hr didn't go up a peep which is a pretty big accomplishment in the 'things other than power' category.

Also, some of our pro guys have been making incidental contact with riders to acclimate them to racing in tight quarters which is good idea; except now dudes that can barely keep their own bike up are doing it now which is....smh.

Random hammering in the foothills.

Hit > 1100w for 5-sec, this is good.

Rib pain is way less today, also good.

It will be hard not to race on Saturday!

Most likely still won't do Elite Nats though, probably just a local race the same day. Head's not in the game for such a big risk/race.

So the long term training strategy is build, build, build, break something, rest, build, build, build, break something, rest...

This is my last "race week" block, then starting Monday back to a 4 week build block to get ready for State TT and two stage races to finish out the year. Today just easy hour with some 90 second efforts

Don't move to Chicago. Temps dropped from 77 to 52 in less than 5 min during my ride last night. With a 20 mph headwind, you can feel the lake. Given I was on a 3 hour Z2 workout, I couldn't even work hard enough to stay warm. You have 3 options when riding from downtown Chicago during the week.

1. Ride North on a busy lake front path for 12 miles before you get to nice roads.
2. Ride South on a less busy lake front path for 10 miles until you get to industrial park roads for another 5 miles and to a park for 1 mile intervals.
3. Ride through busy traffic and stop lights for miles.

Add the cold weather to that in the Winter and this is why I don't leave my trainer from Nov-April.

Wed: 2 x 15' @FTP
Th: 3hr group ride w/ a couple of nice efforts

Really enjoying the ride to the ride & not driving everywhere. Even found a decent way to get to the trails, about 6 miles of bike lanes.

ex pro that alternately likes me and yells at me liked that I was bringing my TT bike to the group ride. He brought his tuesday and we both got yelled at. Thursday he brought his I did not bring mine and he told me I need to commit to it if I want to be good at it and then proceeded to motorpace the ride for the route. I could barely hold the wheel and learned that I sit too far back. Outside about 18 inches I might as well have just been in the wind. Inside 18 inches it was difficult but manageable. No one else on the ride was willing (or maybe able, I was seriously in jeopardy a few times of losing the wheel for good) to be 2nd wheel, so I got the full effect for the duration.

Recovering well from my rupture about 2 weeks ago.

26 miles of Z1-Z2 yesterday, hanging back with the ladies in group rides. It's hard not to push it when the body knows and feels it can do more. Honestly, some of these old ladies are pretty quick... Yoga and relaxing stretch sessions a plenty.

I was planning on taking an easy day yesterday but I had the opportunity to do a fast ride with some friends that I haven't been able to ride with recently. My legs felt like crap yesterday and they still do today. So in the interest of not being completely fatigued going into my backpack trip this weekend, I'm staying off the bike today.

~15min shakedown of the racebike, not even enough to call them "openers" - just making sure everything works out.

this afternoon: Tanner (family friends) annual BBQ bonanza. I'm gonna keep the beers to three or less (ok, maybe four...)

tomorrow: cyclovets crit

Redlands looked like Beijing this morning with a thick cover of smoke. The fire is about 20 miles north of here and the wind shifted. Had to drive west to ride my bicycle. Took it easy for the most part, calves still are tight from some solid training days earlier this week.

Also, took some pics of my $70 aero bars (linked on my Strava) https://www.strava.com/activities/329474863/

Edit this was yesterday, today is more a hodgepodge and the smoke is all over (that smoke trail is covering about 300 miles):

We're directly south where the vegetation ends.

Bailed on racin tomorrow because of the weather forecast, but managed to eek out about 5.5 hours today. Barely enough to burn off the 8 beers and Chinese take out I ate at 3am. When did I start acting like I was in college again?

on another note, recently raised by bars about 7mm and really like it. I can get every bit as low in the drops but feel more comfortable overall.
