I was missing probably 5% or so from what I would need to be mixing it up more, so I think I could actually be racing this thing next year. The only serious move I made was to try and catch a dangerous-looking split maybe 1/3 of the way into the race, I hitched a ride on a fast wheel down the backstretch and caught the good line through turn three to head up the hill and latch onto the tail end of the front group, gained about 50 spots in that one lap. That felt pretty cool. Nothing really happened after that, sat in till the end, dodged a turn three crash on the final lap and got my pack finish in 44th from around 86 starters. So, an anonymous race for me, but in a fun and encouraging for the future kind of way.
Too bad I missed you. I watched a few laps of your race but the family and lunch were calling. I ended up 34th/89 in my race. 0.92IF, 175bpm avg. HR. We were turning 1:30 laps, around 29mph. I had a shot at the money but getting caught behind that crash with 6 to go just crushed me. Too much fight too late in the game.

Have a great offseason. I'm sure we'll meet up again next year, maybe at Wells.

Found a photo of my break attempt. If you squint really hard, you can just make out the gap.

After another half lap, I realized I wasn't going anywhere and eased up.

cycling cap isn't aero! nor the beard. going to be tough to ride in a break with that frontal area.

I like the idea of caps and think they look alright most of the time, but I've never been able to figure out how to wear a helmet properly on my brow and still be able to see up the road with a cap on. I'll suffer them in wet winter days, but those tend to be more upright rides anyway. Otherwise can't do it.

After that other thread I feel like everyone is so sensitive I should be extra clear that I am just jealous that you can grow a real beard. I have to keep mine short because it just looks like crazy pubic hair after about an inch.

I never see caps under helmets in the 1/2's.

Or beards for that matter..

Although Ben-Jacques Maynes(?) had a beard at Santa Cruz Crit I guess, so there is that. But when he was in the ToC the beard was gone.

Jandro, one day you will have to assimilate!!

This race had some weird tiny under that went on your left shoulder (at least that's what they told us, not on your arm), and a regular number that went on your right side.

I could never race with a cap. How can you see up the road and keep your head low?

And cyclists shave too much. I have pics without some sort of beard and my face just looks weird.

Im still not sure what the second number was for and the reg desk didn't try to explain it. A few folks didn't even bother with the second number in the earlier races.

So... how often exactly do people comment on the aerodynamics of your beard? Thant's a great pic though!

How hard did you jump to try to make the gap?

I've been goofing around at some of the Red Kite races and team practices trying to open up gaps. For me, I found that anything under ~750 watts wouldn't get me off the front unless I had already picked up some speed going up the side

Since my sunglasses options are limited (I wear my raybans on really sunny days) until I cough up the money for prescription oakleys, the cap really helps keep the sun outta my eyes. I have a pretty flexible neck (kwaki's gonna have a field day with that one) so seeing up the road, even hunched over the drops hasn't really been an issue. I sweat a lot, too, and the cap keeps it out of my eyes.

Beard is staying. I think my gf would cry if I shaved it.

wktmeow: I was second wheel coming out of a really tight right hand turn, tried to yell at the dude in front of me to punch it but he wasn't interested. I jumped around him at ~700-750w, but I think the hesitation let others sprint out of the corner and latch onto my wheel. A couple corners later, that photo was taken and you can see the 6-7 guys that made the connection with the rest of the bunch not far behind. Looking at my data, I'm grinding up that little hill at about 550-600w and the pointy end of the chase caught up 2 turns later. That's when I looked back and eased up.

tl;dr, I hesitated and probably didn't jump hard enough, which gave enough people time to react. Moral: I need to commit more and time it better.

Often. I laugh about it. The minuscule amount of drag my beard causes is not what's keeping me from podiums

Yeah that was the first time I've ever seen that. I liked everyone's interpretations of it though. Lengthwise, around the cuff, down the shoulder blade, etc, haha.

Impressive.

My experience with facial hair is that dudes love it, chicks hate it (hate to kiss it anyway).

This. I'm attempting to grow a scraggly beard right now and the lady isn't a fan. I think once it fills in she'll like it. We're taking a long weekend trip next month so I figure she won't break up with me over it before then so I have some time on my side.

as the owner of a mixed blonde-brown beard that looks half full even though it's actually 2/3 full, stick to it! Hater's are always going to hate!

I passed the brillo pad stage months ago. I'm into the soft, luxurious stage now.

you should shave it off, turn it into a wig, just to screw with people.

I never really understood the purpose of caps. Is it supposed to catch sweat? block the sun? keep the head warm??
