Another Sunday, another local spring crit series attempt. Raced both races again. Since I have no shot at winning any kind of sprint in that field full of pure sprinters, I spent a lot of time up front chasing after breaks. Turns out you can get lucky that way - in the first race, with five (half-mile) laps to, two guys got a 15-second lead. The peloton was doing nothing, so I got to the front and took a hard pull for most of a lap. At least that's what I thought I did. When I "swung off", nobody was there. Oh. Four laps to go. So I buried myself, and the peloton never tried too hard. Had to semi-sprint on the last lap to hold third place. Which isn't as good as it sounds, in a points race, but I'll take it.

3rd place in the GC, despite a flat in the first 10 miles. It was my first stage race, I really like not getting penalized for my lack of sprint. Breezy at the start, I knew the field would get blown apart at some point.
Before the race, we worked out some strategy with the other Austin team, they had a guy sitting 3rd ( 2 seconds / 1 spot ahead of me in GC). He's a better climber than me and neither of us has a prayer at getting time bonuses in a sprint, so we decided to get the teams working together. Plan was to get him 1st and me (and/or my teammate, sitting 6th) on the podium. The guys sitting 1&2 in the GC had over 20 seconds on us, so we needed a break-away, preferably one that didn't include either of them. Tall order, they both had some strong teammates.
My teammate and one guy from the other team went early and caused some chasing by one of the leaders team, but it was early. Still on lap 1 (right after the break was caught), I got a flat. I thought my day was done, but figured I'd TT it back and see what happens. The pace must have been pretty slow because I got back on early in lap 2. I had some help drafting the wheel truck, but it was still my biggest effort of the day. I sat in for the next lap, I couldn't have chased anything if I needed to, but stayed near the front "looking" like I was ready to chase.
Last lap and I was back a bit, pace dropped and it seemed like a goot time to take a flyer up the side. At the same time, my teammate launched the leader on the other Austin team and the guy sitting in second place jumped as well. I got his wheel just as I was coming up the side and got a free ride to across a short gap. About 10 of us got a gap with about 4 guys willing/able to work. Race leader did not make the split. We kept a gap for a while and got caught by a chase group of another 10 guys. Still no race leader. The ~20 of us put about 10 minutes on the main field during the last lap, it was a painful effort and nobody knew how far back the leader was.
On the GC, I ended up 2 seconds back in 3rd and the 4th place guy was only 1 second behind me. I knew he had a decent sprint and he got 3rd place in the RR sprint today, he ended up making up 6 of the 7 or 8 seconds he needed to grab 3rd overall.
A great weekend of racing, I'm marking this one as my "A" race for next year. I think I've got at least 30-45 seconds of improvement I can make in the TT, maybe more. On a side note, I ended up wearing a skin suit in the race today thinking it might help if I ended up alone in the wind. It certainly didn't hurt when I had to TT back from the flat. I might make the skin suit a habit when it's not hot out, not much downside except looking like a dork in a skin suit.

Thanks all...
Thanks..I'm guessing my team name was off because I registered day-of, and our licensed team name is different from what we are supposed to "advertise". Sorry if that caused some confusion. We appreciate yer attention to detail

120 (!!) for the 3-4s. 43 for women. 66 4s. 44 5s.
Snow last night, low-mid 20s in the morning, black ice in spots during the clinic. Yet we had I think the biggest Bethel ever.

First race of the season. Teammate attacked the 2nd prime, and i went to the front to shut things down. When i saw the guy who won yesterday (I didn't race yesterday) attack with 25+ minutes to go and passed my teammate and a few others, i knew it was the move to make. 3 people got away, 2 a Canadian college, one from another, and me. We worked together really well, though one of the Canadians was dropped. going into the back stretch of the last lap, the Canadian attacked, I made the other guy shut it down, and countered right when the Canadian was caught. It was good and all, except that i carried way too much speed into the next corner and almost ate it. The other two zoomed past, with the Canadian gaining ground. I rode up to the other guy and attacked when i thought he was done for, only to have him claw back at the end. All in all, not a bad day's work, especially since i took this for a training race. We ended up gaining 40 second on the field, and my teammates helped out a lot with the blocking in the field.
That said, first race of the seasons reveals a few things such as my somewhat rusty handling as i bumped shoulders twice (one of those was def my fault), and had trouble with the corners the whole day, though i did later learn that the best line apparently took me over a hump in the road...

Yes indeed. That was my first time racing at Bethel today and I have to say that it's a ton of fun and well organized. Lots of NYC teams came out. Well done Aki (great to meet you by the way!).
I raced the 4s and the 3/4's and picked up my first prime so I was happy about that. Had a lot of fun and will be back for sure. The cafe is a sweet touch!

I'm not much on race reports. But a shout out to shovelhd, the rest of Brauer and my absolute friend (who races for sherp kid's team). These guys are the reason why I get to win. The coach builds a hell of a motor.

I planned to race at the Fayetteville Stage Race this weekend but stayed home with a 101F fever. I'm still at home sick but at least I can live vicariously through everyone else's race reports! Great job, grwoolf and Nate!

Upstate Cycling Classic Road Race - Cat 3/4 - 4th/40
Wind was the name of the game here. We had 20-30mph gusts all day. First warm race of the year too (finally in the 70s). This course was a 10 mile loop with some punchy steep climbs (one about 3k to the finish). 4 corners between the climb and the finish (kind of crit like). We did 4 laps in the 3/4s. Some of the course was sheltered from the wind with trees, but there was one section for about 3-4 miles that was just nasty, with cross/headwind.
My goal for the race was to make it as hard as possible and to get a break to stick. I figured since we were combined with the 4s, making a hard race should get some gaps. Plus I like making people suffer. I sat in for about the first 10 minutes of the race to warmup (was lazy before the race), then starting hitting the front. I attacked a couple times, but nothing was going, everyone was still too fresh and following. Went through the head/crosswind section and told myself do NOT get stuck alone out here (was brutal). I saw a ramp up on the road coming, and I just hammered at the front of the group. Didn't get a gap, but I put the hurt on the group for sure. Another mile or two and we hit that climb not too far from the finish. I attacked again and got a gap. We hit those crit like corners on the downhill before the line and the group caught back onto me (though completely strung out).
The next lap a couple guys got off the front. I was a bit worried because I knew one of the guys was strong, so I was doing a little bit of work on the front to keep them in check. One of my buddies and I attacked a few times as well to keep things interesting. These guys are starting to know me too much though and my results this season, so I always seemed to never really be able to get away. I attacked again hard on that sorta finishing climb with a couple guys and we got a little gap. We got gobbled up after that crit section again and the pack went flying by. We latched on, and they hit a climb after the start/finish really hard. I got dropped (oops?). Off the front to off the back, always good. I went a little too deep on that last attack I guess. I keep within contact (50m or so) and catch up easily once it levels out a bit and I could drop the watts down. I get back on though and notice, where's the peloton? This wasn't a breakaway, we had just simply shattered the peloton. There was maybe 20 guys left of the original 40.
After that lap and almost popping myself off the back, I decided to take it a bit more easy. I followed a few attacks but nothing was sticking. One of those guys that was in the early break got away a few times and would dangle off the front with a decent gap for a bit, and maybe get another to join in, but we kept bringing them back. We came across for the bell lap soft pedaling. We had all pretty much fried each other, and still had a lap to go. After a bit a couple guys rolled off the front. Then another guy. Then another guy. I kept trying to get away, but I was semi marked and I just could not get a gap to get up to them. I decide to do some work, because I knew they had enough guys to stay away. They had 5-6 guys at this point. I got very little help from other guys. I did a lot more work this final lap than I would usually like. Finally someone attacked and we grabbed his wheel and closed most of the gap. I finished it off and pulled that break back in.
We hit that finishing climb all together. I was sitting like 4-5th wheel and a guy attacked. The main group of strong guys in the race so far all kind of hammered up this climb and stuck together. One guy got a little gap. I came across the top 3rd wheel. There was a guy that got that gap up a little ways, and a guy in between me and him. Wet went through the crit corners full out. I grabbed the guys wheel in front of me, but he hadn't gotten the leaders wheel yet. I was dragging some of the peloton on my wheel as we came out of the final corner. The guy that was in between attacked again and had just enough pop to where I couldn't follow his wheel. The peloton saw that and flew around me after I lead them out. (This is the part that surprises me) Somehow after hitting that climb hard, and leading the peloton out for about 200m up to 500m to go, I hammered and caught the draft at about 10th wheel. The sprint starts and I start passing people. I'm like WTF. I had totally destroyed legs, but I guess everyone else was in worse shape. I see an opening on the right and swing over in the sprint. I dive for the line....OOPS, that's a tree shadow....Dive again at the real line. No idea what place I got, there was like 3 of us that crossed right at the same time. Turns out I got 4th overall. The guy that gapped us on the climb stayed away to win (super impressive).
The race was much harder than expected. The wind and those punchy climbs made it quite interesting. The P12 race looked like it was basically every man for himself, just shattered the field.

I just got enough points from this race. I'm kind of stuck though now since I registered for Battenkill in the 3s and have my flight and trip planned to go up there. The 2s field is full. I'm investigating to see how confident they are I can be placed in that field before I upgrade. Don't want to fly up there and not race!
