Um, yeah... 324?!?!?!?!?!? Here's my power chart from last night's p123 race at Fair Park in Dallas. I stayed in the bunch the whole time, never got near the front, had to eat wind a few times unavoidably. Avg speed for the entire race was 27.4 mph. The Elbowz boys and the local strongmen kept it lined out for long periods but a break never got away. My avg power: 263.

That looks like an 80's punk hairstyle.
Crits are always a bit jerky, but if I'd had to guess I'd guess you were sitting a bit back on whatever wheel you are following.
It's not a bad idea to do one race and do nothing but focus on positioning and drafting. Don't worry about results, just work on that skill set.

Yes, sitting back and mostly going back on making up spots sometimes on a wheel.
Great idea focus on positioning, as I have no skills with that. I have my mission for next crit. Thanks a ton man!
PS Didn't do the punk thing in the 80s but I plead the 5th on the mullet. Thanks again!

First race of what I'm certain will be an illustrious career. Got dropped. Didn't crash. I'm ok with that.

Short version: 22nd place, but tried something new, and my teammate won.
Nice day for my first road race of the year: Salisbury Road Race in Lancaster County PA, M40+ Cat 3/4, 32 miles. About 40 starters. I had one team mate in the race - the big motor, long efforts forever guy. Neither of us are sprinters, so we had decided up front that we'd take turns attacking the field until something stuck. First of five laps was very slow, so he went toward the end of the lap, solo. Even knowing his abilities, I didn't think he could hold the pack off for four laps, so I continued to conserve energy near the front of the pack, waiting for my turn. But when he was joined a lap later by one other racer, I figured it was time for me to support my friend. I've never been in a race where team tactics played any meaningful role, and had only read about blocking. So I didn't rate my chances of success at making a difference very high. But I was amazed - given a rather unsavvy pack and only a few racers willing to do work, my blocking was far more successful than I could have imagined. There were numerous times that I sat at the front of the pack putting out rather lackluster effort for what seemed like 15 seconds before the yells from the back ("he's blocking, you idiots!") spurred someone to come around. And they didn't try hard enough to exclude me from the rotation, so this would happen every couple of minutes (not always that extreme, but enough to break up the momentum). Didn't even take all that much effort, although I did have to respond to a few chase groups that formed, which burned a few matches. The gap to the two off the front never got down below 15 seconds or so, and my team mate managed to take the win. By the end of the race, when it was clear that the break was safe, I was in no condition to undertake anything on my own, so I just rode in with the pack.
Didn't think I'd ever be particularly happy to finish in the bottom half of the pack, but I had a blast.

CU Research Park Crit, SW4, 6th/21.
This was my first crit after my crash/separated shoulder last August. I had schizophrenic goals of 1) just do a crit and get over the leftover crash jitters and 2) get on the podium. Goal 1 - well, i still have some work to do, but it wasn't too bad. Goal 2 - nope.
I wasn't very comfortable in the pack for the first few laps, it got a little better as the pack thinned out a bit. There were a couple of people I didn't want to be near but kept ending up on their wheel, and one chick kept pointing at a (orange-paint-marked) manhole and yelling "hole" every lap until I said "shut up" which I wish I hadn't said, oops. But pointing, sheesh.
My fitness is OK but there were some stronger women. I stayed in the top 10 and worked on not working, I tend to chase everything down, I'm trying to learn patience but I just don't know how to tell if a move is a dangerous one that I don't want to let get away vs one that isn't going to stick. I did chase a few, but let other people do it a few times. Achieved my goal of not being in the wind much and not pulling the pack around. I was thinking I would try to go with about 4 to go, but the pace was ramped up by then and it was just all I could do to stay in the lead group. I followed a wheel in a sprint and picked up a couple of places, but I was pretty cooked, achieved my max HR, and NP for the 30 minute crit was above my (newly increased) LT.

Third race today, same place as I've raced before RMR crit c-flite (4/5). Did okay, I'm getting more comfortable in the pack, so I moved around a bit and tried to stay at the front where I could pedal through the turns. 3 laps left and I was at the front pulling and I picked up a thorn, so I pulled out and pulled the thorn. Decided I'd try to just hang off the back and tt the straights until the finish or my tire got too flat, so I did that til the finish. Came in behind the main pack, but was something like 17/45 overall. I need to get some better tires (I've flatted in 2/3 races I've done), and work on maintaining position, I kept finding myself in the back half suddenly and had to work my way up every lap.

Fouche Gap RR (P12) - 32nd/78
Not gonna type a book today. This is a 4 lap course of rollers with a finishing 1 mile 10% climb for a total of 80 lovely miles. My goal today was to sit in during my first P12 race, get used to the pace, get comfortable with being there, and do the best I can on the finishing climb.
Well, went exactly to plan. I sat in, and pack surfed the whole race. Boy things are so much smoother to move around in a pack in the P12. On the 2nd lap I played around on the front a little and got a feel for the pain that is attacking/following. Drifted back after that, recovered, and went to the end pack surfing. The race was pretty punchy even though it was very fast. A couple groups got off the front, then another group got off on the last lap.
Ended up with about 30 guys off the front on the last lap. The peloton just kinda cruised to the last climb. We hit the climb, and I positioned myself at the front. Followed some wheels and did 6.1w/kg for 5min to come home 3rd best from the peloton.
All in all, great first P12 race. Looking forward to more! I'm pretty sure I could have snuck into one of those breaks had I had that goal for today. Then technically got 3/50 on the final climb, so I feel very confident I belong here. Which is good!

Also, having a decent FTP never hurts, but it's not as beneficial in the crit vs. a road race. When I'm riding well in a crit, my power distribution is all at the extremes (I'm either soft pedaling or maxed). Ability to surge and recover is key. Riding off the front is the exception to that.
