Why? 2 isn't enough to really feel so unless it's a social setting that just seems like a waste to me unless you really like the taste of beer or something. Guess it's just not my thing.

I like the taste and the buzz. I've cut out almost all other "junk" calories from my diet. The two drink per day maximum recommendation (for men) comes from the various public health agencies.

These recommendations are based on the mountains of scientific research that has been done on the health effects of moderate drinking. These agencies don't recommend you drink alcohol either. They just have guidelines for those who choose to drink. BTW, I also consume dairy products.

Yeah but the two drinks a day thing is a recommendation for the average person, not for athletes where recovery is paramount. I'm sure healthwise you're fine doing it but if you really want to push yourself to the maximum that's not really the right thing to be doing.

FWIW, Matt Fitzgerald would disagree. I think he knows.something about the subject matter. Don't think there is any evidence that moderate alcohol consumption compromises recovery.
But also, I am a slow cap wearing Fred, so make.of it what you will.

I wasn't saying 2 drinks a day is bad or detrimental, I'm just saying that having 2 every day in no way appeals to me. I also wear caps sometimes and mattm can suck it!

Yeah, I definitely don't drink two every day, but a beer with supper is nice, so it is part of a typical day for me. Sometimes two over the course of the evening.

Ironically, the hilly Wednesday night world's during the season around here is associated with the Bike and Beers group. There is always a rendezvous at a.pub within walking distance of my house after but I rarely join them because I generally do a 4:30 am ride on Thursday.

yeah it's good for me to balance. I can get hot and bothered about my weight, but if I want to get down to 6-7% it's probably going to take 145lbs. That's a level of dieting I'm not too into. I love racing hard and eating hard on sundays. I got down to 148 and 8ish% before christmas. I'm hovering around 150 now. Which is probably a couple of pounds lighter than typical for me. The question comes in the balance though. Part of training and racing hard is the ability to eat like a gavone without the ramifications that would impact most people. It's good to race crits, and do short races I guess. Weight doesn't matter quite as much as it would if I choose to pound up and down hills all day.

I don't disagree, enjoying being alive is more important than being .5% better at niche games almost nobody cares about. I was just saying that strictly speaking, if you're aiming to do it totally right 2 beers/night is probably not doing you any favors.

Eat like a Gavone, love that. I know what you mean. After a double race day like Bethel or White Plains I'm craving protein and love to down a prime rib or a slab of salmon. I know some here have had or have eating disorders and I'm not referring to them. They have to do what they have to do. I'm also older and nearing the end of my career so balance is more important to me.

Let's hear some high nutrient snacking items.
Me? Plain old raw pumpkin seeds. Yup. Loaded with iron, protein, fiber, and best of all if you suffer from cramps: magnesium.

I should check in on this thread more often.
I recently started trying to drink more liquor and less beer. It's fewer calories and I like the taste. Bullet Rye is quite good.

I've gained about 5 pounds in the last two weeks. Not having the extra 5000 calories I get when I cycle is hard to adjust to; its doable on a normal week but one day trip and two birthdays have taken their toll.
Obviously, it could be argued those events are no excuse, but I really like cake!

High nutrient? Any nut or seed. Kale chips. If I wake up prematurely hungry, a spoon of peanut butter is perfect. My favorite bedtime snack is plain low fat Greek yogurt with chocolate whey, flax or chia seeds, maybe a little granola, and frozen blueberries. Hay-vahn.
Low calorie? I gotta try the broccoli with salsa idea. Raw air popped popcorn isn't bad, but the volume I can suck down is like 600 calories. Tea and water help with fullness sometimes.
