A kind of taboo and definitely ridiculous question - PEDs

First the question, then the back story.

Q: can you smell Testosterone replacement therapy on riders using it?

Story: buddy of mine has a non-racing co-worker who uses T replacement. Said co-worker apparently has a very distinctive smell cross between something kind of feminine and chemical-y. This buddy was in a race with me and said he could smell the same smell on a rider. I rode next to said rider and there was definitely a unique smell to him, not shampoo/detergent/whatever. Something along the lines described to me. Feminine/chemical kind of smell.

I'm sorry to ask something this childish, but my curiosity is piqued, and I'd like some external input. Obviously rider could have a tue and legit reasons for using T replacement if he even was.

Heh.

My (former teammate aka cyclist) friend's dad is on T therapy. He doesn't seem any different. It may be a reaction of certain people? I'm curious if a doc says anything because my sample size is just one.

Is that even going to make a difference? I have actually always wondered about that stuff and if it was actually considered doping. It would be interesting to find out because my own blood work shows low testosterone levels and I am in my early 20s.

If it's a "gel" T replacement, yes they have a rubbing alcohol/chemical smell that lingers. Axiron definitely has this smell.

Primary Dr prescribed it when I went to her with low energy, cold and moody all the time and unable to lose weight. Turns out it wasn't from low T, but hypothyroidism which took an endocrinologist to figure out.

I used to work with a guy who took garlic supplements - at the time, there was a lot of hype about how important garlic was. He used to smell like garlic.

So, maybe it is a medication or supplement he is taking. Also, it could be that he is taking something in addition to the testosterone that is causing the odor.

It's doping...

Guy up here in Ontario got caught and issued a 2yr ban last year for just that. He had a prescription, but that doesn't matter...

'T' is a banned substance so if you need to take it for low 'T' levels then that's fine, but you can't race. I don't make the rules, just play by them...

I've always wondered about people with asthma who want to race. My sister has asthma, and takes clenbuterol/albuterol as part of the treatment. Would she have to stop taking it in order to race? (not that she'd be doing any races of a high enough profile to be tested, just curious.)

hank: There's what's called a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE), which covers those cases. It could also cover use of T-replacement.

Interesting. I know of a doper down in Houston... wonder if it's the same guy. Sort of wonder, anyway. Meh.

Check the WADA list...

They have loosened the rules on asthma meds...

My wife is on puffers and does not need a TUE to compete and we've made sure by checking the WADA list and contacting the CCES (Canada) directly...

I fall into this category. I have an albuterol inhaler and checked the WADA list. Like others have said you do not need a TUE for albuterol. It is allowed in aerosol form, but only to a max amount, which is something ridiculous if I am correct. Something like 16 "puffs" within a 24-hour period. Which if you are using an inhaler that much, you don't need to be on a bike.

The WADA limit is 1600mcg/day. My ProAIR inhaler is 90mcg/puff x2. That's at least 8 doses per day to be over the limit and that doesn't take into account that it only lasts a few hours. EIA is real, people. It's not doping when you can't breathe.

Rbart is right about T replacement. No TUE allowed. Do all the T replacement you want but don't race. That said, Masters is full of it.

Good question. How would I know what it smells like when I've never smelled it? What if it's some kind of embrocation?

I'm going to clean up my act, come off the PEDs quit smokn' the crack and maybe one day I'll earn me a blue star...

It doesn't. You can't get a TUE for low levels of a naturally occuring hormone.

Otherwise, you'd have a loophole you could drive a tank through.
