Agreed. The little dude gave him a good push though.

My thoughts exactly. He initiates the contact for no reason...Gets my wheel going around the corner...then let's it go...Tries to get it back as I move closer to the curb...then gets brushed off by a Jr. that weighs about 125lbs. All for nothing since he grabs a free ride a second later from another rider.

It doesn't show in the video but there is a 15mph headwind as you go around that corner. Everyone wants a wheel but there is no reason to fight over one 20 minutes into a race. Just ride in the wind for a few seconds until someone comes around to give you a break.

I'm often the smallest guy in the races I enter, 5'5" and 125 lbs, and my experience is that size isn't too relevant in most situations involving contact - though I don't think I've experienced as much aggressive contact as describe. But anyway, point is, there seem to be some bigger guys in the lower cats anyway who are used to their size being an advantage in other parts of their life and want to throw it around a bit, but it's not that easy to just move someone around even if you have 75 lbs on someone. Actually, it might be harder - if the bottoms of your drops are at the level of my hoods, how are you going to make contact while far enough up next to me to take advantage of any movement I make to get away?

My other actual point is that de-escalating that contact, as you say you usually do, is usually the best response to aggression in most parts of the race. If someone wants a wheel that badly, let them have it, don't get into an altercation that could cause a crash just because you're right. And report behavior like the OP's to the officials.

    I know...
I would never grab someone by the helmet by the hip? Yes
I think I put it best in my previous post. I am a super super aggressive crit rider that I will not deny. There are times that there has to be contact but I can assure you that though I do joke around people's safety is important to me. Intentional contact should be limited to those who know how/where to do it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1JtMpBiSWQ). I do believe that others try to mirror this type of racing due to the fact that they think that is the way to race when in fact they are just putting everyone in jeoporady

Well, now that I'll be racing the 1/2/3 crits Wednesdays, can I send you over after school to beat them up if they shove me around?

There is no place in amateur racing for headbutting in a sprint, hip checking someone off their wheel, grabbing, poking, shoving or otherwise making contact unless it is to avoid a wreck.

    Period.

Were you there last year when one of them (there is a clicky bunch) started at me after the race about being sketchy through the last two corners? I told him that if he didn't have the power to keep up to get out of my way, I had to go around him somehow then had to go around the outside of our boy from UHC (RS) on the last corner. RS and I talked about it after and he was laughing about the fact that I rocketed by him against the cones.

And yes I'll go to the school yard (the clicky group doesn't much care for me)

I agree. In being honest I do forewarn people to settle down and have moved people that are being sketchy and going to cause a wreck. I am not one to initiate the aggression and as grolby would attest am a pretty approachable easy going guy just don't start it with me
I have had people hit my helmet, smash my bars, elbows, knees, hook me with their bars, try to catch brake levers, etc.

I was out of town for that one. Did RS find himself a new pro contract again? You know he technically rode with us for a year, after his old team shut down... Can't blame him for not sticking around, though, we had no elite squad at all at the time.

ANYWAY I'd just as soon avoid any bumping. Don't make me nervous about the big boy racing!

Then why do you tell stories glorifying the use of contact? That's what I mean about setting a good example.

I did have a little contact with him a while ago. I believe he stayed with his team from last year. I know he is finishing off the collegiate season.

No need to be nervous about that field they are all good guys.

Seriously, one of the things that strikes me about this discussion is how little sense of self-preservation some people have. Speaking as a slow and elderly racer, I don't pull this sort of stuff not just because I wouldn't like to injure another rider (I wouldn't) but because, like the vast majority of low-category racers, I'm just not good enough. It's one thing to be competent enough to protect oneself when **** happens. It's quite another to think one can ride like Mark Renshaw at 30+ mph and stay alive.
