Use caution with this method depending on how much motion you want to show. If you are looking to show a lot of motion with a really slow shutter, you aperture will possibly be at the minimum opening and it may not be closed down enough to give proper exposure. If you do find you are at the limit, switching to aperture priority and controlling the aperture opening will give more consistent exposure without the worry of underexposing.

Cool. Going back to the point of my edits on the first page, Danny Munson nailed the technique with these two, capturing motion blur, under exposed background, and flashed subject for drama. Along with some gritty post processing, and these two are total wall hangers:

This is nicely lit by Jim Hicks. Late in the day, rainclouds threatening. Not sure if it was a speedlight, but probably, as I haven't seen him out there with a strobe before. BTW, this is former pro Chann McRea's wife, Jen. I've raced with her a bunch. Solid.
