    Help with offer from team??

I did pretty good at a race last weekend and 2 teams have since emailed me about joining. The one I would rather join emailed general stuff, then I replied, blah blah general stuff. Then he asked what I wanted in return for wearing there jersey and being on the team. What do I say? I don't get how the stuff works. I don't really want anything lol.

So he said "What do you want?"

    Do I ask for anything?

    Thanks

Jeez how good do you have to be to get emails after decent results in cat5? How did they even get your email address? I'm obviously doing something wrong.

Lots of money, a team bike, and a personal masseuse. That's pretty standard fare for a team recruiting cat 5s at the regional level.

    I'd ask "what's standard".

If you tell him first what you want, one of two things will happen: either you'll ask for too little and leave things on the table, or you'll ask for too much and look greedy.

Typically, around here, you could expect discounted price on team gear, possibly even a free kit, race fees reimbursed, and shop discounts on bikes and gear.
Some well funded teams may cover some race expenses beyond entry fees.

In my experience you've got to get to the Pro, 1, level to get much more.
You could fall off a cliff and die.
You could get lost and die.
You could hit a tree and die.
OR YOU COULD STAY HOME AND FALL OFF THE COUCH AND DIE.

I agree with Merlin. Most P/1 guys will see kits, race re-reimbursement, travel stipend for bigger races, etc.

Our Elite Team deal is sweet but when I hear some of the other stuff floating around the interwebs I wonder how much is real, how much is BS

I think it's typically hookers and blow, but you'd have to ask Boonen about that.

If I were a new rider and someone asked me what I wanted I'd say knowledge and advice. Meaning I'd want to learn from the more experienced riders on the team, get advice on whatever.

In terms of material goods most teams will get some kind of a break if buying from a particular shop or something. They may get discounts on kits as well. I'd ask to be treated like the others on the team, no better, no worse. You're there to learn initially (which will actually force the "teachers" to think about what they know and how to explain it) and later, if you're still with the team, you'll be there to share what you know.

You may be expected to help with an event - all teams are supposed to put on some kind of race each year. I'd ask if it's possible to race in the event even if you work it, unless you don't want to race it. I work our club's cross event but I have no interest in racing it. I've also helped with the club TT, ditto on racing it.

    I know. Sounds weird, right?

At this point I would settle for someone to race next to is willing to teach me racing versus riding.

Settle is the wrong word. Love is better. I would love someone to race next to is willing to teach me racing versus riding

Several teams out here have sponsor requirements that they work with juniors. The result is a search for any warm body in that age group. At one point a few years ago one of the better juniors had a guy "negotiating" his deal.

    I don't think he's even racing anymore.

While there's heartburn over Masters getting product and money support, that's where the customer base is. Junior and youth racing should be supported but much more in a logistic and training/education sense. Throwing a bunch of swag at some 15-16 year old gives a lot of them a sense of self importance and entitlement that ends up being counter productive in the long run.

My friend who I ride with told him when he asked. And thanks for the good advice, I will probably ask for just advice and help learning how to race. Probably not booze though, we'll see

You're still going to bring up the hookers and blow though right? If not, you're just leaving money on the table

    Well it ended up being

I pay $30 dollars for jersey, bibs, skinsuit, socks

They pay for race entries, hotels, and travel (gas, etc.)

Seems awesome to me. Moms not thrilled about a 5 day trip to Gateway Cup in Missouri in August but I am.

That's a pretty damn good deal. Generally these things are supposed to be kept quiet though. I know my team has specific language that any pro deals are not to be discussed.

for a cat 1 that's a good deal, for a cat 5 that's awesome. I need to find RR Donnelly and make it our title sponsor again.
