I'll use a garmin edge 500 for both because I know which buttons to push to get the readouts I want, didnt want to drop another $X for the SRM PC whatever it's called, and didnt want to put another goddam magnet on my bike to get a speed readout on the SRM PC whatever it's called unit.

In the end, I dont think you can go wrong, they're both good pieces of equipment that I think will provide you with the information necessary to implement a successful training program.
If you need a spare quarq ring (works for SRM as well), i can give you one when i see you at Coppi this weekend (btw, am i the only person to think that it's pretentious for a team to call themselves Squadra Coppi and the race they host "il Giro di Coppi?"). If the magnet falls off of the ring, just use the quarq putty to get it back together.

Otherwise, the quarq putty works quite well, especially if your RHS chain stay has a metal portion to protect the carbon. 2 rare earth magnets held in place by the putty has worked for me.

I would have bought one already except I run SRAM and don't want to go to Rival cranks

I guess. The Stages works as well as any of the Quarqs I've owned.

I'll never forget being on a live-aboard dive boat with a bunch of fellow photog's, when the (pro) friend who put the trip together looked around at everyone fussing with their cameras, re-lubing o-rings between dives, and said "Those are the guys who will flood. Better to just change the film, close it up, and be done with it." With the Nikonos V, we all not only had just the right grease, but our carefully selected indian head nickel that fit the slot in the battery compartment cap 'just so' - used to avoid cross-threading.

In addition to the Nik V, I used the equivalent of an SRM (Nikon SLR in a Tussey housing)... I'd say Ikelite was Quarq. <- failed attempt at making this post on topic, rather than the blatant reminiscing by an old guy it obviously is.
