Usa Cycling - How much money do you really win?

Can someone explain the payout for an event? I don't see much talk about it. It looks like only the top 3 get paid for each category.
But how do they figure out how much?

usa cycling has nothing to do with it. generally payouts are from the promoter of the event, who makes their own rules with the budget they have available for payout.

For example Tour of the Catskills: https://www.bikereg.com/Net/18431

It says cat 4 purse is "$1000 / 10 places", meaning the total payout is $1000 and the top 10 places get paid (payout is 10 deep). The winner might get $250, 2nd place $100, etc, and 10th place might get $20.

It's entirely possible to get paid and still not break even after the race fee.

Well put. Some races, p/1, NRC, NCC pay quite a bit more and quite a but deeper but Globecanvas got it right on the money.

    Each event is different.

FWIW, before upgrading to Cat2, when I was getting decent results in Cat3 I was about breaking even with the entry fees.

USAcycling does set some rules, or at least they used to IF there is a pay out (which is not required). I don't know what they are anymore. It has something to do with the total purse in the category requiring a certain number of places deep I think. I know there are some races they pay deep like $1 for this reason.

In other countries the federation might stipulate prize money. I think Belgium was like this, races had either 20 or 40 places (and entry fees were basically nil, like literally $1, when I went there). That's old information though, it might be different now.

As a promoter I try and make it so the paying places covers the entry fee at minimum. I spread the prize money out so that the winner doesn't get most of the money.

There was one race I did as a racer and I got 4th. I was a bit shocked to find out that the winner got $900, 2nd got $250 or something like that, 3rd got $125, and I got $90. I thought that it was a bit stacked in terms of money out.

Another promoter gives the same prize money to each place, 1st through 10th ($35 each place about 5 years ago). I'm not quite at that stage but my max/min prize amounts are separated by at most $100 or so, so max prize is $120 and min is $20 or $25. The same racers win/place regularly so I try and share the wealth with those that eek into the minor places, like 6th-10th or so. As someone that basically never wins I sympathize with the ones that aren't winning

My prime wins have been bar tape, brownies, tubes. Best have been gift cards.

Guess I only win primes nobody wants.

If you're in this for the prize money... you're going to have a bad time.

Breaking even on entry fees would be the bee's knees; on gas + lunch would be the icing on the cake.
Attack in the feeling because it says I'll win absolutely.

If you're covering entry fees + gas + lunch you're probably getting some pretty good gear and can't eat the cake.

Yeah, I've won and gotten less than my entry before. My biggest haul was $400 in cash, $200 in gift cards, and about $350 in prizes from a single win. Cash gets split with teammates -- and that was one race in the 21 years I've been racing.

I walked away from two races with $2k. Better payout then I ever got motorcycle racing.

Of course I've won and gotten a T-shirt.

i've made a career out of finishing one place out of the $$

for races that have a charitable "cause" i usually just hand the envelope back and ask them to donate it figuring it's found money and I was going to race anyway

    Damn outlier.

Most I've gotten is about $150 and that was at my own race (placed plus got overall). I'm pretty sure I haven't won more than $300 in my best year and many years I'm at a big fat zero. The big bagel.

I've never gotten reimbursed for entry or gas except for a couple races 25-30 years ago when UCONN paid for some of that. most I've gotten in equipment is a jersey and shorts, although come to think of it I was probably a sponsor of the team at the time and paid for it anyway. The most expensive kit I ever got cost me $3k or $5k and I only wear it on the trainer because I don't race for them, just sponsored the team for a few years.

A racer back in the day said he expected to win $1500 a weekend doing 2-3 races a day on both days. He'd regularly win two races and place top 3 in the third, all in a single day. I don't think he's done that for a while but he's the guy that won something like 22 races and got second like 21 times in a season (as a Cat 3) - he told me as we were waiting for prize money in a P123 race (I think he won, I got 6th). Eventually, after many years of being left alone, the officials would upgrade him year end, he'd request a downgrade the next year then do it again. Multiple national titles as a 3. It was really frustrating but at the same time it was sort of a good lesson - if he's competitive in P123 races (top 3) and he's absolutely spanking me in the 3s then I don't belong in the P12 arena. 10+ years of watching him clean up the 3s and M35/40/45 was frustrating though.

You know how there's often a grab bag of race food samples at registration (mini clif bars, etc)... I won a prime a few weeks ago and the guy grabbed a couple handfuls of the little giveaway bars and dumped them in my helmet.

My buddy won the Merco road race and got a rock and a bottle of wine. He gave me the bottle of wine for leading him out for the last km.

Edit: he also won a jersey... so that's cool, I guess.
