Used to race Norcal many years ago. Got a question. The Dunnigan road races started going west up the hill and then south. There was an area before the downhill the road was literally ground up to a gravel road. It was nasty with gravel and loose pavement. Did they ever fix that stretch of road?

You realize you're asking about road conditions 8 months before the race?

I did it two years ago and don't remember a gravel section, but then the crop dusters were spraying us, it was stupidly hot, and I quit after 1.5 laps because the air quality was horrible.

Raced it this past year, I dont remember any gravel. I don't remember going west up a hill and then turning south either. The only real turns to the south were after coming out of the hills heading east or at the very start of the race, but in the flats. Route may be different now.

Dunnigan has been clockwise for as long as I remember. And while the road surface is crappy in places (it is a VeloPromo race after all), I don't recall any gravel. Are you possibly thinking of Leesville Gap?

We used to park at the trailer park and ride out to the start and would go counterclockwise going west then south then turn east and returning up the I-5 frontage north back to Dunnigan. Of course, that was a Leibold race. One of our juniors (Team City) crashed and was hit by a pedal over his ear and if it wasn't a Mom following the group who called 911 and stopped to help him till and ambulance from Woodland took him for stitches, it might have been pretty bad for Manny... Of course this was in the early nineties.....

I got online to register for the Early Birds, and noticed they have "Cat 5 under 30" and "cat 5 30+".

Well... I'm 29, so racing age will be 30. Not sure if it matters which one I sign up for? Anyone know?

Go for 30+. They'll base it on racing age. If there is an issue, they can address it day of. If you have your racing license for 2014 it will only display your racing age (30).

If you do all the early birds, you should be done with 5's, right?

Nice, I found the transition to be pretty easy. Similar speeds, a slightly tigher pack, breaks still don't stick, and races are maybe 5-10 minutes longer. Sit in, work a bit, then sprint.

Yeah, I jumped in with the U30 group a couple of years back as a spry 40 yr old. No one seemed too concerned at reg since the "results" aren't recorded.

Been down and out sick this week, so bored and thinking about racing and watching countless race videos.

Who all is coming out to Cal Aggie on Saturday?

edit: at least the Tour Down Under is on the TV.

If you're into torrenting, cyclingtorrents.nl is awesome . Usually HD coverage uploaded everyday with commercials stripped out. Only downside is you have to be forward thinking and download it before you want to watch it

Nice.

Are you familiar with the route/course? I wasn't, so I drove it on Sunday on my way home from early bird. It isn't too bad, a bit of a climb coming in to the finish, but nothing too extreme. The only part that may be problematic is the turn into the finish/bump. It's pretty tight, off camber, with a steep drop down a shoulder and barb wired fence on either side. I imagine people will be gearing up pretty hard coming into the turn as there is about 300m to the finish from there. People may be strung out a bit though from the climb coming in to that turn though.

Yeah it's the backside of the Wente RR course from what I can tell - luckily the easy part!!

So the finish is on the top of the "bump"?

Thats what it would seem like. It is a good steep kicker. Hopefully they open up that stretch of road for the finish. If not you will need to be top 5 through the corner to not get boxed out.

Ends shortly after patterson and cross roads
