My first race is approaching soon!

Hey guys!

This is my first post in the 33! I just signed up today for my first cat 5 criterium . Not looking for advice or anything (If you'd like to provide some by all means go ahead) but just wanting to express my feelings of excitement, fear and nervousness. I have been riding for about a year now but officially training with the help of another forum member for about 2 months now and I've advanced more in those two months than the other 10.

I am actually about to have an intense few weeks, in a good way. Bought a power meter and should be getting it in a few days. Have a century this coming saturday, the criterium the next saturday and a 3 gap ride the sunday after the crit. I couldn't be happier right now . I am wearing my speedsuit for the first time since I bought it about a month back this saturday because finally I feel like I can fit in it without looking like the michellin man.

Wish me luck
OUT!
Luis

Speedsuits (skinsuit I assume) make you faster! At least, I always feel faster in mine.

Best of luck.

Thank you guys!

I feel confident that if I just break away from the beggining and try to stay away from the pack like im running from a herd of buffalos I'll be able to slice through the wind in my body paint therefore winning all sorts of trophies and maybe getting bumped to cat 1 since there wont be a need for me to do any of that whinny cat 4-3-2 stuff :\. HTFU! :sarcarsm over:

I am going to get destroyed

+1 to the "Have fun" part! Give 'em hell. Your job is to race safely and cross the line (hopefully first) with nothing left in the tanks; in that order. Good luck.

I did my first crit a few weeks ago and was so nervous I had nightmares about sleeping in and missing BOTH cat 5 races. It was way fun though. I am completely hooked now. I think in crits you don't really feel pain even when working hard - the excitement kind of masks the effort. Now I am getting excited for my next crit. Oh, but don't get so excited you forget to be careful - you don't want to end up mixing with asphalt.

I will defintielly post up that report.

Right now my goal is not to get dropped. I wont be shooting for the front but rather to stay on the outside line of the peloton until the end when I will give it my all trying to score the best placement I can.

I am nervous as nervous can be!.. I start training with power this week or the next and I hope that can give me an indication of how good I can sustain effort on openers and such!

I am hyped !!!

Trouble comes from the inside out. When the clueless guy on the inside line f's up, the carnage moves outward.

Try to figure out who looks smooth and competent, and follow their line.

Betcha i'll be getting dropped by a few heavysets with massive horse legs! And still, tried the speed suit on yesterday and it doesnt fit like I thought it would.. the belly still shows and I have a bit of muffin bottoms ! on top of that it has a hole next to the belly button about 2mm diameter. No idea on what to do! I wanna wear it but Im afraid I might end up with a totally exposed belly and a pair of body paint shorts!...

Duder you're racing bicycles, it isn't a fashion show and when you are in Z5 it will be the last thing you are (and should) be thinking about
Have fun, race, safe and get ready to get the bug...

Finishing upright with the group is a good goal. If you come to the end, and have a shot to win or place so much the better.

Ride smoothly, predictably, keep your eyes out for people who don't, protect your front wheel.

Wait, isn't that almost ready to puke feeling pretty common after an extremely hard effort like that?

A couple things at play. Lactate is generated by hard efforts. It's metabolized by the liver, and if you get too much of it in your blood, your liver is maxed, and you feel nauseous. If you combine that with a full stomach, it can magnify the effect.

The main reason you don't want to eat anything substantial in the 3 hours before a race is that your stomach requires a lot of blood to digest a meal. Your body will not allocate enough blood for your legs if you're still working on a meal. If you fast for ~3 hours, then your legs will get what they need. A light half-snack in the last hour is fine, but chew it really well.

Mathematically speaking, I'm probably closer to my last race than my first race.
