50-12... to weak for the end of races???

50-34 front. Just went to a 12-25 cassette for the holy grail... 16 tooth cog... I'll live in this thing for training around 21 mph...

But I'm a little worried for racing for sprints with a 50-12 "big" gear... Anyone have experience racing with this weak gearing. You really can't get a weaker big gear than this. Thinking I should go to a 11-23 instead... Am I overthinking this?

i won a p/1/2 field sprint with a 53/15. I also came in 3rd in another at 40 something odd mph with the same gear ratio. I doubt the 50/12 will hamper your ability to win a sprint.

Firstly and lastly, this. Have you? I suspect not since you're asking this question. Spoiler: yes you can.

I forgot about this:

39x11 top gear for much of the race, due to a shifting problem up front. Equal to about a 50x14. It wouldn't be my first choice in a sprint but it's doable. The guy that finished just behind me is a Cat 2. The guy that swerves at me allegedly podiumed at Nationals Masters 40+ Crit (that's what everyone said but I don't know who he is).

In what, a mountain bike race?

I finished with a 3/4 pack, almost taking a prime and making multiple fliers with my highest gear being at 50/14.

I win sprints in .... 53x14? I've taken a sprint before in 53x15, foot speed is the name of that game.
There's a kid around here (U18 RR & TT champ) who has been winning pretty well most of the P/1/2 crits around here this year, and doing it on 52x14.

I expect you'll be just fine.
If you can't sprint with good foot speed, maybe less fine.

I've been thinking and doing some calcs lately, and think it would be damn near impossible to output enough power without spinning really freaking fast. I've only done a few races, but I have started to leave it in maybe 52/14 or less on the flats (for sprinting). Think about it - with 50/12 you could hit almost 40mph at 120 rpms.

Get out of here with your math and logic. He needs a 53x11, just like the pros, in order to win cat 5 (6?) sprints.

No. Alpe de Huez is a big ring finish. The 39/29 was a race that finished at the McDonald Observatory.

That's like 112 gear inches. People win sprints on the track all the time with ~90 inches. Spin to win. Unless you're sprinting downhill at 50 mph, you'll be fine.

I've been beaten while using a 53x11 or 54x11.

My young teammate handed my ass to me in a head to head sprint last year while using junior gearing. He also hit almost 1700 watts in that gear while doing it...

50x12 at 120rpm = 39mph.

There may be a few circumstances where you'd like to have the 50x11, but not having the 11 isnot likely to hold you back.

If you don't need the 25 cog for a low, the better reason to prefer the 11-23 is it makes the 34 ring more useful.

That sounds about right. When I told a co-worker I was racing up there, his response was, "My truck had trouble getting up there."
