I dug myself a big hole after Nats last year when I spent three months riding my commuter bike because my race bike frame was broken. I had to take three weeks pretty much off the bike to rest. The new frame didn't fit like the old frame so there was some adjustment. I came out of winter training in decent shape but not anywhere near as good as previous years. We took the team trophy at the spring series and I helped my teammate win the overall. The next weekend after that series was over I was taken out by a Polish national champion who had no business racing on the pointy end of an American criterium and separated my shoulder. I was back on the trainer in a week and did a training race after six weeks, but it was like starting all over again mid-winter. I set my sights on the National Senior Games in July and busted my ass to get into national class shape. My Quarq started going wonky during this period, so coaching was really tough with the numbers all over the place. I won the gold and the bronze with no real form, on pure adrenaline and race craft, then followed it up with a podium the following weekend in NH. After that it was a battle to try and reach some kind of form which really didn't happen.
On one hand, only one win is a disappointment, since I had four wins the past two seasons. On the other hand, to win two national medals in the middle of a disaster is very special to me. I learned a lot about myself.
The one good thing is that the surgery question has been answered, and I have a really nice base to start building on for next year. I am feeling a lot like 2010, the year before I returned to racing. Super motivated. Axe to grind. Want to kick some ass.

2013 Goals:
Top 10 at Battenkill -- got 2nd.
Top 20 at Tour of the Catskills -- got completely shelled.
Race more crits -- success, want to do more.
Not overtrain or burn out -- fail.
Start racing Masters -- success, and finished top 10 in my last race.
By the numbers my season started amazingly well, hit a dip, recovered, and then fell off a cliff. I knew overtraining/burnout was a risk coming into the season and I totally failed to avoid the risk.
Results: 3, 5, 2, 10, 22, 5, 3, 1, 41, 17, 18, DNF, 55, 7.
2014 goals are basically the same. Avoid burnout, race Masters when possible, race more crits. Top 10 at Battenkill would be setting sights high but that's a goal. Not getting destroyed at Catskills is another goal.

e-wang:
break 1100W for a 5" sprint. This was the goal last year, but may actually be doable
got close; 1075W. Actually quite proud of this
break 600W for 60" (doable). Again a goall from last year, and the signs are there that I was probably capable of this last year, but never tested it. 9w/kg would be swell.
who knows; didn't test
break 390W for 5' (doable). Again, same as last year, though i really didn't focus on it; shows how meaningless this ewang is despite doing well in VO2max intensive races.
done & done; 395W, may have been able to push a bit more
break 325W for FTP (doable); currently at 285W, peaked at 315W (69kg) last year.
not quite there; maybe got to 315W; 315W from 2012, by all indications, was probably a false reading
get to 68kg by end of December, currently at 70.5kg; 66-67kg for peak races in early April
nope; 68.5kg was lowest i got
Build enough anaerobic strength to contest small-group sprints.
perhaps; didn't get in this type of situation
racing:
enter more races. Finally graduating and getting into the real world should make this more realistic
more than previously, but injury meant less racing than i wanted
Get in meaningful breaks and attack shrewdly. Got good at this last year, now i just need to get better at it and make it with the break to the end.
check
Work on my racing poker face.
not quite sure what i meant here
Continue to improve my skills at surfing wheels and cornering amongst skittish riders. Again got pretty good last year, just need to keep on working at it.
check
Win in a few Collegiate B races.
got fired twice
Upgrade to Cat 3; help teammates upgrade to Cat 3.
check on the former; may have contributed to the latter; did get a 2nd place as a cat-3
Most importantly, racing safe
done
work/life related:
Defend my thesis in the Spring and learn to live in the real world . Northern VA, here I come.
hah, this is a good one; still writing and not sure when i'll defend; more like i didn't write much

I got one last chance to win a cat 5 race before season's over. Got a couple of podiums, and happy about it, but raising the bar a little bit before going to a 4. I want to see if I can become a 3 next season.
hack, same here. sort of. I started to get a little more serious in March, and improved throughout the year, until finally signing up for a race in August. 2014 is going to be great.

Goals:
Get out of the 5s without crashing: Check.
Get out of the 5s in track without crashing: Nope. No crashes, though.
Podium: Check (sorta, I podiumed a team sprint at Hellyer velodrome. 2nd)
Podium in the 4s: Nope
Try everything in races: working on it but did a fair amount of experimenting
Don't crash: didn't crash in a race, but broke my ribs on a training ride
Race at least once a month, preferably twice a month: I was on track for this but lost ~8 weeks after breaking ribs. I did 2 races on broken ribs, though; one being my 2nd place at Hellyer.
Lead out a teammate: Check. He won.
Get into or initiate a breakaway: Sorta not really. I attacked a bunch, but didn't get a real break to stick.
Pretty meager goals, but it was my first year and I have no idea what I'm doing, yet.
My fitness has improved by leaps and bounds and I'm at a place where I'm not struggling to keep up in races and can actually think about what's going on and plan what I should do. I've learned a lot, had a few top 10 finishes, and I'm really excited to race twice as much next season.

Want to do a triathlon in December:
Working on it.
Had no goals coming in to the season:
Check
Odd year. Fought my allergies and asthma all year; I sure would like my old lungs back. Some really bad days. Had a fair amount of bad luck (three flats, one tip over). Had one "no chain" weekend. Helped teammates to several wins both in single races and one series, some of which was appreciated, some of which was not. 2 state jerseys, 4 state medals, 10 wins, 2 GC podiums, 21 other podiums and 35 top tens. 61 races.
From a coaching standpoint it was a good year helping other athletes grow and achieve in the sport, especially when they had to overcome illness or injury.

my season had some successes and some challenges. the early season tested my resolve, but my work seemed to pay off later on.
goals (written last september):
a stage win in a big regional stage race...and GC win. (ID'ed a need to up my TT game.)
managed a TT win and a RR win in separate stage races, to go along with the GC. (also had some really mediocre performances in stage races.)
drive threshold to 4.8 watts-to-kilo.
didn't quite make this. i train by numbers but believe numbers aren't really relevant to racing. i was mainly using this as a driver to improve TT performance and to set a personal best on a local hill climb. my goal was 32:xx for that climb, and i wound up coming in at 32:08 and winning it. best time from prior seasons was 38 minutes.
surprise some people (myself?) at nationals.
i'm hoping to be relevant at this level in a few (3-5...7?) years' time knowing full well i'm not there yet. made some good progress toward a multi-year goal in the past 2-3 years and can possibly show up next year with some expectations of results. a 'long-term goal' for me in the past has been something achievable in 6-12 months, so after my performance last year realizing it might take more like 5 or 7 years was a serious gut check. i've decided to put my head down and do the work. feels good to be committed. lots of smaller goals went along with this, like racing less (/being selective), doing my work on and off the bike, working hard but also recovering properly.
do some new-to-me races and get to know some new racers.
check. new races for me in CA, NV, NM, and NY. got to meet some amazing new people and deepen some existing friendships. this stuff means more to me than any results.

masters nationals is a long-term goal of mine, but this year i decided i'd actually like to earn the right to compete in the p/1 field at cascade. no illusions of actually doing anything at that level, but i'd love to make it through the time cuts and race the twilight downtown crit in front of the big crowd. at 40 years old, this is a stretch goal for me. i'll see if i can make it happen. i know i can get to cat 2. cat 1? we'll see. (i'd like to do it the right way--enough points in a 12-mo period and through p12/p123 (or cat 2) races, though i know a few masters points can count.)

Goals:
Upgrade from Cat5 to Cat4: Done. I learned a lot and was able to attend almost as many races as where held and even travel to one in GA.
Place top 10: Sort of. I did have a 7th and 8th finish but they were crits and my goal was really more RR focused. My top RR finish was 11th.
Race as Cat4 prior to off season: Done.

My second son was born in September 2012, so I expected to do virtually no riding this season. My goals were not to get too fat, and just accept that I would not be doing much riding for 2013. With that in mind, 2013 worked out pretty well.
First, I was able to drop down to between 136 and 140 lbs (165-170 in Jan 2012). I am getting close to what Friel calls climbing weight - 2.0 lbs per inch of height. Sweet.
And it is definitely true that I have very little structured or consistent riding this year, so my fitness has suffered. My power numbers have held up better than I feared, I think I have only lost about 10 - 20 watts. Next week I test my FTP, so I will find out for sure.
However, through a great deal of luck, this was also my first year racing. I did my first road race. It was loads of fun, it was going really well, and about 3/5 through I blew up spectacularly. I threw in tactically useless attacks just because it felt fun, and hell, it was my first race, might as well push the envelope and learn some lessons. Next year when I come in with a decent base and a bit more strategy, I should be able to do pretty well.
I also did my first crit. Learned about the accordian effect, with a vengeance. Started off near the front, fitness wise it was no problem, but I am still learning to ride in a pack. I will admit it, I got scared on a couple of corners, so I drifted back. Near the middle to the back of the pack I quickly discovered how much harder it was. While I was killing myself to hang on to the main group and try to move up a bit, I never got dropped, so I call it a good first crit.
