track stands are only relevant for match sprints. I've raced on the track for five years or so and have managed to never do a track stand.

Trackstand vs. "proper" trackstand??
What makes a trackstand "proper"? The only kind I know of is angle the front wheel, pedal slightly forward and roll or pull back (freewheel).

Cool, then I've been doing a proper trackstand all this time. But only on my FG. On my freewheeled bikes, I learned to use the crown of the road so my wheel is turned to the left.

I had a friend win a big NORBA race in CO one time. He showed up for the Expert race really baked. He pulled his bike off the roof rack, and realized that he had left his front wheel in the driveway. He borrowed a wheel from a just-finished Sport rider, and went off to win.
He can trackstand too.

I have am fairly certain I am going to have to have knee surgery again this fall. It will probably be close to 3 years to the day from the last one on the same knee (meniscus repair). It seems I have had something happen every fall where I can't hold on to any fitness through the fall/winter. Knee surgery 3 years ago, hernia surgery 2 years ago, heart and lung issues last year and now this. It's like I'm starting over every January/February.
So with that in mind I'm not 100% sure I am racing next year. I get the itch to line up from time to time but I've gotten fat and slow this year with reduced training time. I'm not complaining. The time was well spent and well enjoyed helping my daughter. It just is what it is. Mostly I just want to enjoy myself on the bike. So...
1. Get my knee fixed so I can ride hard and participate in other sports that are a little less knee friendly (tennis and basketball for a start)
2. Get my weight back down and increase strength (lean muscle mass). Would like to get my legs nice and strong but will need to work that in along with the PT and not blow out my knee.
3. I have always wanted to get my FTP up to 250 or higher (I know...don't laugh). Highest I ever tested was 235 (June 2011) and that's when I was finally able to hit a top 10 in a race (albeit cat 5). After I rehab my knee I would like to build my FTP to 250. Right now I'm lucky if it is at 200. I seem to be able to go from sub 200 to 220ish pretty quickly. But I think 250 would be a stretch in one season coming off rehab. We'll call that a stretch.
4. Big stretch - Depending on 1-3 above maybe toe the line at a mass start race or two late next season. If things progress well and I stay healthy I'll start tossing in shorter harder efforts to get my poor heart ready for the abuse of a crit. Though I may enter a time trial or two along the way with my massive FTP for the fun of it.
I guess that's about it.
This year was my first season, and it ended for me when I was laid off in June. So my first goal is to get outta effin' Cat 5. I want to finish "respectably" at Rouge-Roubaix, and later in the season start racing M55+/M60+...assuming I'm safe enough for the field. I'm not unsafe, and not especially flaky in isolation, but among guys who've been doing this for 40+ years, I'd probably be pretty obviously inexperienced.

I am extremely noobish at this but It is time to set some goals! No particular order:
1) Not get dropped on my next race
2) Get a podium after not getting dropped
3) Win a race after being in the podium
4) upgrade to cat 4 after wining a race
5) Get to "race weight" whatever that is for me.
6) Do at least 10 Races (including TT, Crit, Road Race)
7) Do 6 gap century in less than 5.5 hours.
Really ambitious but I got time
