Probably the two biggest advantages to the drops are better aerodynamics and position stability. Much harder to lose a hand hold in the drops if you get bumped or hit something vs. the hoods. That said on loose surfaces or cobbles the tops seem to be the choice of most. Part of that is probably not having your taint pounded by the saddle.

I'm a big fan of questioning authority, especially when they say something like, "because it's always been done that away".

But there's usually a reason why it's always been done that way. I just prefer to discover it on my own.

I ride in the drops quite a bit. I'll go to the drops more the longer my ride gets because my back hurts less when I'm in the drops. However the drops do give you more control in case something happens. If I think there's a chance of something happening I'll be in the drops. Since things can happen virtually at any time it means I'm on the drops a lot.

I tend to stay in the drops for most group riding stuff on flats and downhills. On uphills I'm usually on the hoods (especially if standing) or tops.

I'll do much of my JRA rides on the tops.

Authority is one thing, experience is another. When some Cat5 thinks they've got it all figured out, they just look like an idiot.

Most beginning racers do need to spend a lot more time in the drops. I don't 100% is required to be doing it right. Especially not when climbing. Descending and sprinting, on the other hand - I won't argue with those.

Ya I rode today and like you said! the drops were so much better climbing and sprinting in. I hit 35 on my sprint I was cool with that. And that was in 27 degree weather. Lungs were cold lol

Because of aerodynamics? Not everyone gets the same power in similar positions. The power difference can overcome aerodynamics.

Another consideration is weight balance in each position. I don't attack well on the hoods because my weight is too far forward.

meh. I have these things in between my arm bones that bend, and being on the ends of the hoods allows for a farther-forward position, which is key on some gradients.

look at your profile pic: bend your elbows more, have your hands on the hoods and back in same position = more aero.

The drops work best for me in both of those situations. When I've attacked while on the hoods I don't get as much of a jump as when in the hoods.

exactly what? this was neither an attack nor an uphill sprint. In a normal sprint my chin is about 2-3 inches above the stem.

PS. I, too, happen to have some things in between my ulna and radius bones that bend. Who would have thought? Also, i dare you to do the climb in that photo with your position so far forward. Someone else actually tried that on a earlier section at 15% or so, and his rear wheel popped off of the ground as it was too steep and sandy, taking out himself.
