Arsenal Crit
Cat 3/4:16th
Went off the front on my own with about 17 to go. I had no intention of going that early, but the opportunity presented itself. I was solo for almost 10 laps and held a 20-30 sec advantage until the group closed me down. Sat in for the sprint.
Cat 1/2/3: Dropped
I was already cooked from my effort in the prior race, but actually held on until 10 to go. My legs finally shut down and said F you!
1 more race left in the season for me.

Red Kite Time Trials
E4, 4th place, 7 seconds off the podium. Should have shaved my legs.
Course 11 mile out and back, avg ~1.6% grade on the way out. The outbound leg starts off a bit faster with rollers, then a tad steeper and steadier. I did this course in April with a time of 28:35 - I had left it all out there, but this time I planned to vary my effort much more.
1) Treat the course like 2 TTs back to back: Finish the first half just below pain level "dead" to gain more time uphill, then TT back with whatever I have left, focusing much more on position than power due to higher speeds.
2) Hammer over the rollers extremely hard and ride down so easy I feel guilty to get ready for the next one - like 170%/70%, with ~100% in between.
It worked very well. Out/back power was 309/280 compared to 300/295 in April (same overall average by time). This saved me 39 seconds - all on the outbound leg (same time on the inbound leg, even at lower power).
E3/4, 7/9
Half an hour after finishing I reluctantly lined up again for some training. 10 watts lower and 35 seconds slower was good enough for suckth place.
After the races, I was talking with the E4 guy who beat me by 7 seconds who had all aero gear. He told me that each thing he bought (wheels, helmet) saved him a full minute!

I hope it was the wind. I was 1s slower today than in April.
Raced 3 times.
23s, 26:01 time, good for ... 3rd of 4. :*( Winner was 12s up, 2nd was like 10s up. - I am _really_ bummed by this time. I don't know what was wrong with me on the outbound uphill leg. I felt OK, I just couldn't warm up/get in a groove. I was 1s slower than in April, but the splits were weird. 26s slower uphill and 25s faster downhill. I was happy with the downhill, I felt much more confident and was able to keep the speed up.
p12, 26:03 time, 2nd of 5. Felt terrible on this one, but managed to grind out a near-identical time. I think it shows that my first run was garbage. (e.g. 3rd place in p12, also in his 2nd run, was 30s down of me in p12 but had a 30s lead on my on his first run. That's the sort of fatigue I expected but didn't get.)
Merckx Men, 27:37 time, 1st of 7. Not sure I've ever done anything more painful than a 3rd TT in as many hours, except removing all aero gear and making it last longer. I made the same power this run as the other two, but the aero wheels/helmet were sorely missed on the downhill return. Felt like riding with a parachute and speeds were ~3-4 mph slower.
Despite my sadness at sucking at bikes today, I did come away with $20 cast, $30 gift cards, and 3 beer glasses. I think I broke even from registration!

Anyway, some dudes had like 50mm carbon wheels, whatever. Basically just no TT bikes/helmets I think and we all called it good. I won the Merckx by a minute, but it's more a novelty than a race category for me.

it was "self regulated".. I raced the foil with it's zipp bars, prevail helmet and box-section alu wheels. Also still had the skinsuit on (only 20min from end of 2nd TT to start of Merckx...).

i wonder if the playing field is less level in a mercx TT than in a regular TT. i'd guess that the mercx thing is probably more of a "fun" event for most who enter, though.

i've never done one or been around one, so i was curious how they actually work. lots of stuff like aero frames, aero wheels (even ones that aren't super deep like 303s...or shallow rims with CX-rays), tight clothing, aero road helmets....aero road bars....all that stuff gets people pretty far down the road. wondered where people tend to draw the line between what is kosher and what is not.

I'm sure the strictness goes up and down relative to the event. The one I did earlier this year had published rules (no skinsuits, helmets, shoe covers, wheels other than box sections, etc...) but still nobody actually checking that stuff prior to the race. This most recent one said "self regulated"...
Mix of riders at both were half racers doing 2nd or 3rd runs and half guys without TT bikes who just wanted to race. They are probably less equal if only for the Men Open 1-5 category as much as any gear. In the end they are just for fun and pride. Never points.

They are self regulated because there are no USAC rules for Merckx TT's. It's up to the promoter and what he wants his staff to do.

One field sprint "win" (it was embarrassing so I stopped sprinting), one lead out (the guy I tried to lead out missed my wheel but he and two teammates swept the top 3), and THREE DNFs in a row.
I'm pretty sure I won't race Hartford in Sept (8 corner course) and I think I'm going to miss the Donut Derby due to family stuff.
Let's put it this way. I brought my race wheels into the basement. They live in the garage during the season.

(assuming Hartford) - We're probably going to spectate. We hung out all day last year just to watch, and the weather wasn't particularly good at the beginning. Pro race was incredible, it's the fastest race I'll watch this year (since I miss Beverly, Boston, Harlem, which are the fast ones that I know of around here).

Well, I get to post one in here finally. It's been two years since I entered a race. Starting off having to do with health issues and ending in choosing to spend time that I would usually train doing other things mostly related to my daughter's basketball. And throw in a pinch of laziness...
Music City Criterium Series - Final week. Cat 4
TLDR:
I didn't finish DFL 26/31 - lapped once.
Longer version:
This was my second Cat 4 race. I raced one token end of season Cat 4 crit in August 2012 just to say I got out and raced. I spent an hour hacking up a lung afterward and finished 26/30. I went into this race with only the expectation of lining up, flogging myself and having some fun. My weight is up 15-20 lbs from when I finished my Cat 5 season in 2011 and my power is down about 20 watts and I've done nothing resembling a Vo2 interval or shorter in two years.
It was hot. Africa hot. I don't do well in hot. Luckily our race didn't start until 6:40 so that helped some. The course is about .7 mile loop on an old race track. You could almost say it only has 3 corners by the way it's laid out. You can see it here if you like Bike Ride Profile | - Music City Crit Cat 4 near Nashville | Times and Records | Strava. Luckily for my excess bulk, it is flat .
They announced a beer prime on at the starting line. Ah...frigging great. That will really help out my lack of fitness a lot. The race started out really fast. I apparently put down a 900 watt effort just to try to hang through the first corner (my best ever sprint interval was like 1050 or something like that). I wasn't all that successful. Looking back at the video I did a horrible job of latching on to a wheel. Any wheel. Partially due to lack of fitness and not being 100% comfortable since I hadn't been in a swarm of racers like that for 2 years. Needless to say, within the first 500 meters I was sucking wind something awful. I hung on for the first lap and mostly for the second lap panting like a gazelle that's just been chased by a cheetah. A crash in the tight 180 on corner 1 on lap 2 about did my chances in for hanging with the group, though honestly I was pretty much detaching anyway at that point. Then started my personal race...
3 of us were caught out behind the main group after the crash. I latched on with these guys for two laps. We picked up another guy who was spit out the back. So there were four of us for a while. We were kind of working together. I was hoping we could keep doing that and maybe avoid being lapped later in the race. I had recovered a tad by sucking wheels for a lap so I took a good pull (about half a lap) when the front guy peeled off. It was looking good. I peeled off and latched back onto the back again. Then came the 180. I did OK in the corner and carried pretty good speed but the other three hit the gas (led by guy number 4 who we had picked up) a bit more than I could handle and I was yo-yoing off the back of that small group. Then guy 4 blows up and starts going backward and guys 1 & 2 got a good gap on me again. Dang it!
It went on like this for a few more laps. I would put my head down and TT and carve some good corners and actually make up some ground through the tougher corners just to have them power away in the straighter sections and as I catch guys 1 & 2 after 3 laps the main field comes by us. I try to latch on to the back of the field along with guys 1 & 2 (and guy 4 made another appearance as well).
After the 180 it ends up the four of us off the back again. Guy 1 & 2 take off again and guy 4 finds his parachute again. I'm all by myself. I hit the 180 again and there is guy 5 there looks like he stopped to have a break or something. I end up tagging on to his wheel and let him pull us back up to guy 2 (guy 1 disappeared somewhere). Now it's the 3 of us with about 4 to go. I am sucking wheel hard at this point. With 2 to go I actually start feeling a little better and maybe and had noticed that I was taking the 180 a lot more efficiently than the other two. So I though, what the heck. When we hit it on the last lap I would take a great line if possible (and safe) and just hit the gas and do one strong lap and see what happened. Unfortunately the official pulled us just before we got to the corners so I wasn't able to implement my evil plan. We could have made it around the finish line before the field caught us again, but I'm down with the officials keeping it safe and clean for the finish.
I'm really glad I went out and "raced". I enjoyed myself and learned I'm not really all that far away from being able to hang with the group. Here's what I learned.
1. From watching the video, my wheel grabbing in the pack was awful. After not doing it for two years (and not being that experienced before that) I guess that can be expected. I think it possible to hang with these guys even if my FTP isn't any higher (215 right now). However to do that...
2. Definitely need to do some Vo2 and shorter intervals. The accelerations are what really killed me and forced me to see more wind than needed.
3. Along with number 2, losing a little more weight and pumping up the FTP a bit certainly wouldn't hurt.
Overall a pleasant and encouraging experience. And for frosting on the cake I got to meet @thechemist. It was nice meeting you in person!

Went out for a ride today. Felt absolutely horrible on the bike. One of those days when nothing feels good. Butt hurt, feet hurt, hands hurt, legs hurt, had a headache. Yuck. Could have been the heat a pretty small breakfast and a little dehydration. Blah!

Red Kite omnium finale (flat business park crit, some light wind):
13th in race, but moved up to take 4th in omnium - race all season long, win 2 bottles of wine! Haha
Anyway, first race with a team (but no kit). Due to not yet healed clavicle, I planned to stay just off the back or off the front, but in the end I couldn't resist mixing it up. First lap tailgunned nicely, then my computer fell off, and I wanted to kick it to the side of the road so I move to the front, saw the computer in the middle and the pack on the left - good. I moved off to the middle, eased up, unclipped and lowered my foot, and kicked it straight into the middle of the road. Dammit. Well I only came to race when my parents are visiting for the omnium, so hell if I'm gonna quit over a computer that is most like broken by now anyway. Next lap I noticed we had a moto ref, friendly guy I've talked to before. I drifted off the back a bit and asked him to grab it for me - he already had. Nice (turns out it still works but the screen is messed up).
Rested a bit, went to the front to disrupt whenever a teammate was up the road though. Then a move was reeled in and I attacked, got a good gap right away so I settled into VO2 pace but no one came up and I was brought back just before a prime. Rested a while and went off again, brought back again. Rested and followed 2 guys. We got a nice gap but the first guy pulled a whole lap, second guy reluctantly pulled about 30", then I pulled 30" and we were getting caught. Teammate rides by me and tells me to follow him and he attacks, but it's 4 laps to go and I was resting from my latest effort so he goes off solo and is pulled back.
It stayed together for the remainder, and I did my best resting at the back til last lap. Moving up felt good, we had a 2 man train but no one else could get on it (in the end our best result was 6th). As usual, I'm stuck in the middle with a good amount of energy and no room to move up. Rounded the last corner, sprinted up a few places for 13th - I really wanted at least an omnium position out of the day.

Union Grove Road Race
Cat 3: 1st
They ran the Cat 1/2 with us at the same time so I was 3rd overall, 1st in Cat 3 (scored seperately)
Course was rolling with centerline in effect on back country roads. The finish has a pretty good uphill drag (about 600 meters) and levels off at the line. We did 52 miles (11 laps) and I tried multiple time to get in a break. I over heard another rider say to his teammate he was going at the start/finish hill so I marked him and at the finish of lap 2 he went and I was right on his wheel. 2 other guys bridged up to us and the 4 of us worked well together to establish a gap. It was two Cat 1/2 riders and two Cat 3 riders. With 3 remaining we had over a minute and at that time one of the Cat 1/2 guys attacked hard. I went with him just a little before that when he tried but the other two closed the gap. The second time he went I couldn't respond and by the end of lap 2 he was 30 seconds up the road.
The remaining three of us worked well and didn't have to the worry about the group so coming to the finish we played a lot of cat and mouse. I came around the final turn wide and hit the brakes to force the other two to come around. I was 3rd wheel just where I wanted to be. Other Cat 1/2 rider opened his sprint and I couldn't respond to go a round him, but was able to out sprint the other Cat 3 rider and finish 3rd overall and first in Cat 3s.
It was a great way to end the season!!! Now looking forward to some time off!
