Best race to start with

I have been riding fairly regularly for about a year now and was looking into doing some races this season. I have ridden in groups before and am comfortable with it. During these rides I tend to fall in the middle of the pack. What I was wondering is what would be the best type or style of race to start with?

Where do you live? For most of us, there are races we love and some we dislike. Maybe someone in your area could point out a favorite race of theirs.

I live in the southern part of West Virginia, not many races out here. Mostly mountain bikers, very few roadies.
