University of Colorado Criterium "C" Race Report

I had my first collegiate race this morning. 925 start time. It was cold as balls. We (CSU) had 4 riders in the cat C crit. The women's race finished so the 4 of us took several hard laps around the course to get re-warmed up. It was really cold, but the hot laps were effective. Me and another rider (who was probably the best rider for CSU in the C race - he raced B's before but has since gotten fat and obviously never got points in B's) lined up in the front row. The two other riders were directly behind us.

The race was to go for 40 minutes around a 1km course. The course had some bad spots in the pavement, but the corners were wide, sweeping and FAST. If you were in front you could pedal the whole way 'round and not touch the brakes. There was minimal wind.

The race started hard out of the gates, average speed for the first lap was pretty fast, but by the start/finish line the speed of the peloton had dropped by a few mph (from like 26-23mph). The 23mph pace was held for the rest of the race. Our captain told us to just sit on for the first half of the race, which we did. Another CSU rider placed in 2 out of the 3 primes I think. Said rider is a beast and once we get some better strategy will help us out a lot. Around halfway through it was at least me, the rider who got the primes, and the other guy who was in the front row with me. The fourth rider was there for most of it, but was staying near the back - and rightly so he has a nasty chest cold and was hacking a good portion of the time. On the back straight one of CUs best riders and a few others tried to make a break, but it was shut down almost immediately by the 3 CSU guys near the front. Pretty uneventful. No serious crashes. The CSU guy who did well on the primes had been bucking the wind outside the pack by himself for a good deal of the time (like i said he's a beast) but by about 2 laps left he hit the wall and i never saw him in front of me again. Around the same time the pace kicked up to about 26-28 mph at least as the CU guys tried to make a sudden attack off the front. Me and the other CSU guy tried to cover it down but I got caught back with about 1/2 a lap left. By this point the peloton had been broken to crap behind the first 1/3 to 1/2. I worked like a dog all alone and almost caught up. I couldn't shake a couple guys off my tail, and they ended up getting me in the sprint (my tank was empty and i was well into the red already so it wasn't really contested. All in all it was a good race. I got 14th. I think I could have done better if I used some better tactics. For example, I helped one of our guys get in position for the prime and at one point made an attack that got caught. If I would have just sat on the pack I would have had A LOT left in the tank for the last big jump with a couple laps left. We're also gonna devise some strategy for next time.

Overall we had one guy in 7th, me in 14th, the guy who got the primes got 17th, and the sick guy got 21st. There were about 30 people at the starting line. Several got dropped and lapped by only a couple laps in though.

Anyone else race at CU today? (Drayko I didn't see you or your bike in the C race)

I raced there today with the 4's. It was my first ever crit and it was very fun. I guess there were between 60-80 guys and I finished up at the front somewhere between 15-25th.
Jbhowat, our 12:00 start meant a nice 47 degrees...

At least it was sunny by the time you started... How did the guy with the MTB with slicks do. Looked like he was racing cat 4...

Results are typically posted on the ACA website within a day or so...

https://www.americancycling.org/resul.../mar/march.htm

The CAT4 field was pretty large today... I'm guessing at least 75 started. The pace was quite fast and I think I saw the first guy pulled after 2 or 3 laps in.

47 degrees? Aw come on. I''ve been doing 150-200 miles a week all winter here in little old Rhode Island. Temps have been in the 20s during many of those days and we've been getting dumped on.

Interestingly, I am an alumnus of CU. Great climate there. I wish CU could get some better press than loony professors and out of control footbal players.

I was saying it finally warmed up to 47 degrees. It was 32 early morning.

As far as our 'loony professors' go, you should probably just read some publications that get their facts straight.

32 is cold for racing. Training is different I suppose.

I got my facts straight. I've heard it from his mouth. He's a loony. A bombthrower trying to make a name for himself. He should be able to say whatever he wants - just not on the taxpayer's dime (yes, I know a lot of that dime comes from tuition, but it's still considered a state institution). The constitution gives every american the right to be a moron. Including him. Just don't expect me to pay for it or be happy that he represents my university.
