How often does your coach have you training indoors
Weather has turned and half my workouts are still indoors. I must say e-motion rollers have made training indoors much better and my fitness is better than ever since I've been working with my coach..

I think it's more up to the rider to decide if they want to ride indoors or out. I feel like outdoor riding is more important, however a lot of people have to stick indoors or cross train to make it through the winter.
But if they had the choice and wanted to be outside, why would they be restricted to indoors? Not my thing, but maybe some coach has found it beneficial. I think it'd hurt the mental aspect though, unless you have unusual love for riding indoors.

why would your coach tell you to ride indoors when you could ride outside, that makes no sense. It's hard enough doing some of the interval workouts outdoors, If I had to do them indoors my soul would be crushed in December...

Anything above z4 and i need to be outside. I had a set of 3 minute intervals indoors and i did them at 110-115%, two days alter i was outside and was nailing the same set at >120%

Seriously, there can be benefits to doing some workouts on the trainer, but actually riding your bike on the road is both mentally much easier and hones skills that you can't develop on even the most realistic trainer.

To his defense , to stick to a specific zone for a set amount of time is much easier when following a formula on a PC screen like trainer roads, sufferfest, or a custom chart .. with out red lights , stops signs or cars pulling out on you etc during a hard effort ..

I tried Z4 intervals indoors once and I think I have to lower my wattages cause after the first interval I was cracked. I started the next one and I could barley put down threshold for more than 4mins. Blowing up QUICK.

I never have a problem keeping my power in zone. I often have 4 hour z2 rides where 3.5+ hours is spent only in z2. Indoor riding just sucks yo!

If the coach thought there were pedaling technique issues I could see using indoor riding as a tool to help correct them, but it'd need to be specifically stated, else indoor riding will just accentuate poor habits.
Other than that I could see certain tests being done indoors to reduce variables.
I'm a decidedly unscientific rider when it comes to training so anything I say about training is coming out my nether region.

My coach pretty much says train inside whenever you can get out of bed at 4:15 or 5:00 and need to watch some House of Cards or Mad Men. My coach posts on BF for me too. Coaching is just a hobby for him though, and he sucks.

At some point I would like to experience coaching just so I can get some perspective and learn more. Race results fluctuate to me in importance from season to season, but aren't my only motivations to train, which is pretty steady.
At the end of the day, I'm going to ride and train however it pleases me. Having some sort of seasonal, periodic training cycle mixes it up and keeps things interesting.

On that note I am going to configure my Hed Belgium/Ptap wheelset that I just brought home today. Maybe I will get to use it for my 20's tomorrow morning!

6 months out of the year.
She did give me the option of fatbiking for some of them, but it never rang my bell.
I'm much more focused on the trainer. Weather and terrain don't affect the workout- I do what I need to in the 60-90 minutes and then I get off the bike. I can't hit the same power numbers as I can on the road, but I'm in the ballpark. I drool, I start to black out, I question my own existence... mission accomplished.
Even now that the roads are starting to clear, I'm still inside for all of my intensity workouts. No use in going down on a patch of ice or sand pile just for an interval, possibly ruining the season before it ever starts.
That said, I'm in the Lower 48 for a week, and loving every "gosh, how can you ride in this heat" minute. New roads almost make me forget about the trainer. Almost.

I spend a lot of time on the trainer in the fall and winter. I have a TV in the garage that I watch.
And for the last 18 months or so, nearly all of my riding was indoors as I was rehabbing my knee. As CDR alluded to, it was much easier to work on my pedal stroke on the trainer - I even installed a mirror in the garage so I can see other perspectives on my stroke.

My coach sucks too. He could care less whether I ride outside or inside, I have target numbers for each. Weather and family obligations drive my outside time.

As a coach (not shilling) to me I never prescribe where to ride just hit the number. Part of the athlete/coach relationship is you as the athlete stating you want to spend more time outside. A coach's responsibility is to respect the request of the athlete. Tell him/her what you want.

Also, good to see you're around and didn't choke on a buffalo wing or something.

My coach sucks as well.
Doesn't motivate me.
Has me on the seefood diet.
Rejects the notion of training to get better; just do half a week to stay fresh.
And lastly, sees no reason to pummel noobs, as they should have a turn too.
What an ass. I'm not that over the hill, geez.
Oh, his thoughts on indoor training. Calls me a wanker who'd be better off logging a zero that day, than burnout. Whatev's...
