"So what's it worth to you?"

So the Devil shows up on your doorstep. You answer his knock and open the door. He pulls out a (pick your power meter head unit) and a number comes up.

Your FTP.

"I can get you to here tomorrow"

He pushes a button. Pow. 10% increase.

"What's it worth to you?"

Heh. I love that. The question is when is it worth whatever. The classic bar scene where a guy asks a girl, "hey will you sleep with me for $1 million?" "sure" "okay now that we know what kind of girl you are let's negotiate on price."

For me 10% increase in FTP isn't worth anything, that's almost an error in my pacing or something. 100% increase in FTP, now we're talking. Will I die in 10 years? 5 years? If I was 25 would it be different than 21 or 45? Etc.

I used to dream about being a pro. Now I'm glad I'm so weak that I get shelled by Cat 4s (which happened tonight). I'm pretty sure no Cat 5s were left but I don't know, maybe a few of them also shelled me.

How about two years of dedicated, concentrated hard training. So cool if you could get the FTP gain up front.

if it's the devil and magic I would take a clean 50% bump in ftp, go win a tour or two and rake in the endorsement $$... do we have to pay up front?

Though, if it was like literally the devil, I would both have trouble trusting and also would need to reevaluate a lot of life things.

Only 10%? I would still suck

Would I have to die at 27 like the others, or would I have 7 years? Also, would I have to do a devils 3 way? If so on that last one, I'm out

FTP?! Bah, not really interested.

Gimme better 1-2 minute power, and 30 second power, Beelzebub. Then we'll talk.

No thanks. 10% won't make a huge difference in my situation. And the journey and dedication is part of the fun.

I was about to say the same thing. If all my numbers went up by 10%, sure i'll take it. If it's only ftp? No thank you.

I'd be willing to give my first born son for a 50% increase in FTP. That would put me up there with the Panzerwagon..I would enjoy that

Taking the question seriously, here are some costs that would be too high:

- $5,000
- Giving myself injections
- Shrinking testicles and acne
- Changes in mood, personality, and behavior
- The possibility of being found out and humiliated

Don't do deals with the Devil.

There is good and bad, leaving this sport a few times and falling down the cliff every time, then climbing back up.

The bad is comparing your performance to many years ago and realizing how dismally poor it is.

The good is putting that behind you and using experience with realistic FTP improvement goals and hitting those goals with hard work and perseverance.

The good is also, with new technology today, precise measurement of output rewards compared to input efforts is so much easier. No more guessing.

I've got that, I think.

I've seen 1375 on my PM, but haven't really done a dedicated sprint workout or focused effort yet.

10% would be significant.

I'd ask if there's a pro deal on it. Cyclists being cheap and all.

10% is pretty big. I wouldn't value it quite as much as a new racer. Now in 5 more years when I am eeking out 5 watt gains in FTP it would be worth a lot more. Several years hard work, yup. $5k...yup. Servitude/injections/selling my soul/giving up family...NO

This seems to be the limiter in the races I do as well.

Who cares if you can dump 1400w fresh into a sprint if you're too blown out to sprint in the first place!
