Just-for-fun ride today with a teammate. About 10 miles from home we passed the tantalizingly named "Cliff Road" which is steep dirt. We had both heard it was a dead end, but neither of us had actually tried it, or could even remember who said it was a dead end, so we headed up.
It turned out to be a brilliant 2-mile varied climb. Parts were so steep it was hard to keep the wheels down. It went from gravel to doubletrack, back to decent gravel, then to our surprise, bluestone. The road went through an old quarry and for a while the road surface was the milled-flat top of the bluestone vein which was super cool, with giant walls and heaps of stone slabs on either side.
I didn't stop to take a photo because we had gone past a couple of ambiguous no trespassing signs, but eventually the road came out onto the regular paved back roads again, and it was clear the whole thing was a legit right of way. Definitely going back.
At the end of the climb, it took us a while to get our bearings and figure out exactly what road we had been dumped out on. Can't remember the last time I wasn't sure what road I was on, only 10 miles from home!

Except that the more data that is stored, the more flaky the device gets. Garmin should fix that first.

As a "thank you" to my wife for being so supportive and enthusiastic about my racing, I'm looking into spending the money I would have dropped on cyclocross race entry fees this fall on a road bike for her. Annoyingly, though it's a surprisingly big chunk of change, it's still not much in terms of a road bike budget. It's frustrating to not be able to just do all of the things I'd like to do for her. But I suppose I'll get there eventually.

Echoing what gsteinb said, mom's going in for surgery friday for a second mastectomy and then some other stuff that has been giving her hell lately. Sigh.
This **** sucks, but I'm hoping she's on the mend in the next few weeks. I need to plan a trip home soon so I can go hang out with her.
Bikes direct or used?

Yep. I have to purge all my data about every 2 weeks to make sure.

I don't know. I'm looking into both, as well as into the shop deal (not sure yet if that's an option).

Absolutely. Getting her on a road bike would at least make it a little easier, as we'd be able to go further and longer when we ride together. Right now she has an upright city bike, which is great for what it is but not the best for longer commutes or fitness riding, if she wanted to go that route. Right now she runs - I'm not trying to push her toward cycling instead as I don't care what she does for fun and fitness as long as she's enjoying it, but the running is a bit tougher on her legs. I think she'd at least like having a good bike available.

I almost picked up a 52cm trek 1000 for my wife yesterday for $80 (in Chelmsford, CL listing), but ended up passing on it after double checking her sizing, she needs a 49 or 50. Might still be out there if that'll fit your wife, it was listed in the parts section, rather than with the bikes
Of course, then we run into the problem of storage, but we'll tackle these things one at a time.

At least you can get your lady to ride at all. For some reason mine thinks it is a competition every time I get on mine so will absolutely never ever ride a bike anywhere near me. She knows I do recovery rides and even ride with my mom every once in a while so not sure what her deal is!

I went out for a super easy ride on Monday. Shifted my new SRAM Force 22 front derailleur down to the small chain ring. Chain dropped despite the presence of the integrated chain spotter.
Shifted back up to big chain ring and eased on to the pedals. Stuck.
Shifted back down then shifted back up to try again. A little catch and up goes the chain. Yay!
20-30 yards down the road I hear a strange little sound of something bouncing on the road. Thought I must have kicked up some sort of debris while I was focused on my chain.
Get home...chain spotter gone.
Not a big deal I guess. It shifts with out it. And I think I might be able to get a replacement and fix it. I just hate when my new stuff doesn't work right or breaks.

Lately she's been super super busy with school so she doesn't care about me cycling or joining me. All she does is study 24/7.
