Open enrollment time and subsequent rambling.

Have had a PPO (Cigna) for the past 10 years and really liked it, great coverage minimal costs for emergency and hospital related items. I changed jobs this past year and picked up their PPO (Anthem Blue Cross), had a bike crash with ER visit, and left with a hefty bill. Not too thrilled about that. As a result, I'm considering going over to Kaiser, but like the freedom of being able to go where I want, when I want (I guess that comes at a new price with this new provider). I think I'll have to work on the assumption that a bike incident and ER visit is likely and the cost savings from Kaiser would be helpful.

I guess an alternative would be supplemental coverage. I've had it in the past, never used it, and cancelled it. I've heard/read some less than stellar stories about the lack of payment once you actually have an incident though.

Last year our university apparently changed administrators of our health plan (big enough that we're self-insured). I didn't go to open enroll because I'd been happy the year before so I was shocked to get cards with new provider on them (went from human to BC/BS). Apparently, nothing about what was in network changed (at least that's what HR told us), but we've been hit by lots of surprise out of network charges for labs and stuff this year, which makes me scared as we expect a new baby in 4 weeks or so. It wasn't special stuff either, just routine tests being sent out to the normal lab were now out of network. Never had that happen before, so you can bet I'm going to the enrollment this year and going to very carefully look over my options (which are minimal).

I have been with Kaiser for years and is fairely happy with them. Never had issues getting x-rays, MRIs, etc done. Also handled my out of network visit to Stanford ER without any issues.

Do some shopping, and negotiate, and get as much stuff as you can in writing. There is relatively new things "drive by medicine" or something like that. Basically doctors sub contract or bring in assistants from out of network who then charge what ever the hell they want, or just random doctors stop by and charge insurance. Another thing is you might get stuck with a difference of what going rate is and what insurance pays. Say procedure cost 100k, and insurance agreed upon rate was 60k. Your out of pocket is 10%. They pay 54k, you pay 6k. Then you get a bill from doctor for remaining 40k. It happens. Health care in U.S. is one giant scam.

Promising phone call. Seems that there were people trying to help me without telling me until they got somewhere. He contacted me last night, we just spoke, now he needs to clarify a couple things before he gets back to me. Next meeting for the board is this Thursday (so in 6 days) so I need to have everything in place by then.

On eBay, I just won my first set of race wheels, a HED Stinger 6 and a HED Stinger Disc for the track. now, I'm reading through tubular procedures and everything else. Any suggestions on a crack pipe? The only two I've seen with generally good reviews are the Silca one and a Kuwahara pump head.

what's the story there again? 2 teams? Racer Ex's team passed the other team. Guy 1 on the other team overlapped wheels?

I've read in an old post on here from @Carl That the Silca chuck isn't quite deep enough to grip the valve, so you wind up having to hold it on with one hand or it pops off, is that still true?

yes. IME, at least, but I can show you a cool way to hold the head with one hand and work the pump with you butt/thigh by straddling it. For reals.

No one said anything but those are some cool wheels. I wish I could try some cool wheels on my track bike. I would be curious how that front wheel is in a crit, out of the saddle should be great.

Nice! I should be in the city later tonight. So far I have a planned tour of the famous burrito places this afternoon, a brunch with bottomless bloody marys tomorrow, and an oyster happy hour tomorrow night. Fattys unite!

How we old married farts buy birthday gifts. She puts what she wants into the Amazon shopping cart, then I go and click "buy it now".
For our 25th anniversary a few months ago, I think we took our daughter to a doctor's appointment.
Pretty romantic, eh ?

Thanks, I'm pretty excited about these wheels; like I said, they're my first really nice set. As to how they'd handle, I'd expect that they'd be much like 404s since the Zipp wheels are 58mm and these are only 2mm more at 60.

I'm going to write HED and see if I can get a different sticker set for them; I'm on a black Bianchi Pista, and I don't think the blue will quite fit in. I'm thinking this would be a better fit:

Even though a particular ER facility may be "in network" ...the doctor(s) who treat you are probably not - because, ER doctors are independent contractors, etc... so what are we supposed to do, haggle with the guy who's setting our clavicle?

Are you going to get a drum?

Asheville is a great place. My wife and I go up for the weekend whenever we can. She usually drops me off in Marion and I ride my bike down through Lake Lure and up 74 to get there. That gives her time to shop.

Today on the club ride a lady visiting from New Jersey joined us. Turns out she raced in Jersey and knows gsteinb and GrumpyMctrumpy. Her accent was very thick but I think her name is Mikaela. She did say Gary was very sweet.
