I have a pretty bad habit of stopping for coffee at some point in every ride, usually when the fun part is over and I have to make the 6mi garbage mile trek home. Lately, everyone has been wanting to go to a place that has inside seating and they can stay out of the cold, and I really don't like it because the coffee girl reminds me of the soup Nazi from Seinfeld.

"what is a flat white?" she said today. I must have looked like I wanted to strangle her (not in a good way) because she said she would figure it out.

I can't understand how you become a barista at a really high rent, coffee specific place and have no idea what the drinks even are.

So wtf is a "flat white" anyway?

I thought I was fancy for knowing the diff between a wet & dry cappucino!

As far as I'm concerned, a coffee shop should be able to do two things well:

1. Great drip coffee, and
2. Great espresso.

All the goofy frou-frou "coffee drinks" should be considered just a bonus over and above the basics.

It's basically a latte. I honestly would just ask for a latte unless they had a flat white on the menu.

Follow two simple rules:
1) Be attractive.
2) Don't be unattractive.

Yeah, seriously. People sure expect an awful lot of a workforce that makes $10/hr, if they're lucky.

being a barista can be miserable. hell hath no fury like stressed out, over privileged undergrads before they've had their coffee. furthermore, flat whites aren't terribly common in america, so it's not that surprising that she didn't know what it was (but at a good cafe, they should know). that being said, making good lattes/cappis is most definitely a part of being a good cafe. being good at steaming milk aint easy, folks.

also, tip your barista.

Flat white = latest variation on drinking lots of milk and sugar while pretending to like coffee.

Service jobs in general really suck.

I paid my dues (bad waiter at two Chinese restaurants in/after college), and always look people in the eye and tip even if they suck.

If you're going to bemoan something, at least make sure you're on point. You couldn't be further off.

And flat white was on their menu, it's not like I was trying to stump her.

I believe it's still more milk than coffee, isn't it?

I stop for coffee most morning rides. I'm turning into a middle aged cliche. Usually its 30 minutes easy to the coffee shop, eat, then another 30 minutes easy / warm up.

It is less milk than a cappuccino or latte but more than a cortado, and it's very frothy. The espresso does most of the talking.

The mistake anyone is making is thinking there are high-rent coffee places in Phoenix.

joking, as JVC hates when people say phoenix is ****ty.

I just booked a week off work after new year and need to decide where to go. Obviously it needs to be warmer than here, which isn't hard, and hopefully has some decent cycling nearby. This will be a vacation with some cycling not a training camp.

Last January I did Tucson -which was great- but I want to go somewhere new. I was thinking San Diego Mission valley area, what do the socal people think of that idea? Where would be better? Assume I have a rental car.

If you want to ride bikes don't go to mission valley, anywhere north County is good.
