I remember the blizzard of 1996 as being worse in NYC than 1993.

I went to see 12 Monkeys at the Ziegfeld that night with my not-yet-wife. It was snowing lightly when we went into the theater, and the city was completely buried when the movie let out. We walked from 54th St all the way home to Spring St right down the middle of Broadway, on a Saturday night.

big snowstorms that shut down NYC are so cool, while the snow is coming down. loved the serenity of the few i went through.

(that snow gets kind of nasty not long after, but that's a different story.)

In one blizzard (I thought it was 1995, not 1996, but it might have been 1996, it snowed something like 3 feet over two days) I was supposed to get together with this woman I met, our first date if you will. Of course it snowed like mad. I told her I was going to dig out my car and drive over. I dug for an hour or so, backed my car up, and the car lifted as it hit the snow in the unplowed road. I never looked at the road, I was so focused on digging out the car. I called her back, told her I was riding over. Carried my mountain bike to the next road, which was plowed, and rode gingerly across town. Passed at least a couple cars.

We went out down the street for burgers. We sat down and my glasses were all fogged up from being outside in the snow and then inside in the warm bar/grill place. We were all about to order and the waitress suddenly blurts out my name and says to me, "Hey, I know you! I gave you a massage!"

Everything went quiet around us.

I couldn't see who it was so I frantically wiped my glasses and looked. A brunette, but other than that I had no clue and didn't remember ever seeing her before.

"You don't remember? I went to school with S (my girlfriend at the time, a couple years prior) and she and I were in the same (massage) class and we had to massage the same person. I came over a couple times. Remember?"

I remembered but I literally never saw her because I was already on the table when she came over, S and her didn't say which one was which when they massaged me, and I had my glasses off the whole time so unless she was less than about 4-5 inches away from my face she was just a blurry smudge in my line of vision. So other than some really fleeting sights I had no idea what she looked like.

I still laugh when I think about that. Jeepers.

Anyway it couldn't have been that bad since the woman and I went out for a couple years after that first date and we're friends on FB even, 17 years later. S also, actually, and the Missus has met both.

My cousin is a photojournalist for ny/Chicago times and was covering the deep freeze last year by going out on the train platforms to interview people, he said everyone seemed surprisingly calm about it.

Yeah... it's going to be a big one, and I would rather not have to try and make my way even the two miles to work in blizzard-level winds if I don't have to. But my wife, who is from Tennessee, is far more nervous about it than I am. She REALLY doesn't want me to leave the apartment tomorrow. I'm more concerned with, if I do end up having to go, do I ride my bike or take my skis?

Hasn't really hit the Hudson Valley yet. This blizzard's ego is writing checks that its body can't cash.

You guys stay alive up there. We have our own crisis down here, probably going to get a half inch of rain. Godspeed, and be safe.

Yeah. I'm the exception. 10 years in the job before this too. Most people move quicker. Though the firm I work for does have a lot of long timers. Benefits are awesome here. Especially the benefit of having some flexibility in my schedule during my daughter's basketball season and just school stuff in general.

I'm not usually one to cry overs spilt milk but... just moved offices so I can finally escape the rotten milk smell I created by spilling a latte on the carpet in my old one!

Tried Oxy Clean to get it out, had maintenance shampoo it, nothing worked.

I pity the fool that ends up in that office next.

Lol really - CNN seems to really love this story, every winter they do the "it snows in the northeast a lot, who knew??" headline around this time of year.

This is a blizzard for ants. A storm of the century needs to be at least...3 times this size.
