Edit: But to be honest here. I've had to sell everything. My ex put my in a financial mess. But I'm clawing out of it little by little. There were times when I didn't know if I could get groceries for me and the girls. But people stepped in to help. It can be very humbling. One time I started tearing up. And I'm pretty much a soulless jerkwad. Right now I'm getting above the mess and it's been a worthy battle. Plus, it's taught me and the girls a lot over the past few years. What really matters and how to stick together.

No one should be ashamed of themselves. Especially if they are doing everything to make the situation right. And no one should act better than someone who suffers financially. You just never know when that shoe may come down on you.

Ok ... back to my coke.
Absolutely, but there is a difference between "I'm screwed and need some help, and I don't know where to turn" and "I want to go do a bike race I can't afford".

Incidentally, I hope things stay on an upward trajectory for you.

That said, isn't this is how Olympic athletes funded themselves for years before the interwebs... Johnny was weightlifter who trained on his neighbor's farm lifting tractors, but he couldn't afford to get to the Olympic trials, so the whole town chipped in to hold a bake sale for him and now isn't it wonderful that he is wearing shoes with the name of every town resident written on them? Back to you Bob Costas.

It's all a matter of perspective. I wouldn't consider a $15-25k increase in sale price to be mild; that kind of increase would probably have put any house we wanted out of our budget.

I ended up paying $18k over asking for my house (foreclosure) in 2012 when there were 5 offers in on it 4 days after it listed. I was hesitant to do it, but I'm so glad I did considering how the market has rebounded.

I sold a house for $73k over the asking price back in the crazy days. We leveraged the other offers by intimation. Did another deal at $5k over on a small place last year. Markets are not always driven by rational thinking, but often more by perception and want.

We have nice neighbors, so much so that we trust the daughter to babysit Junior (daughter works at Junior's daycare, mom used to). Single mom, 2 daughters, very nice, we talk pretty frequently in the driveway. Mom started seeing a very nice guy about a year ago, super nice, a recreational rider (so he can't be all that bad, right?), owns his own business, super friendly, just all round nice guy. He drives around a newer 3 series BMW and a Jeep of some kind.

Today he pulled up in his new car, a '14 Maserati Ghibli. I'd just parked the car in our (partially shared) driveway and Junior wanted to run up to the car. It's definitely not a car you'd see around here, at least not in our area. My dad's area, okay, fine, but where we live? No way. So when I saw the Maserati I practically fell out of my car in shock.

So did the mom too because she shrieked with surprise from inside the house and opened the window and curtain to yell something to the guy (to the tune of "You really did it! You got the car!").

Then she remembered she didn't have any clothes on.

hahaha.

I told the Missus who grinned and said, "Well now you know (our neighbor) just a little bit better."

Thinking I may have lost sight of the objective of bike racing. Reluctant to sign up for racing down the street as I'll lose some valuable training days.

I bought a record player and some records at an antique mall.
My favorite find was Vinnie Vincent's Invasion vinyl LP for $3.00

The market out here is always fluid, largely because prices are so high. We're up 100k on our home we bought 2 years ago, but house value is all funny money; we've been up 250k one year and down 20k the next.

And, unless you're willing to relocated to a different area, you can't do anything with those increases because it's not like you can sell, make that $250k profit and move to a comparable house (let alone a nicer one) in the same market without paying all of that profit you just pocketed on your house (and maybe more).

That's the kicker with real estate. Gotta live somewhere.

About 8 years ago, when we moved to where we are now, we couldn't find a place quickly so we rented an apartment for a year. It was a bit cramped but it worked out - housing was plummeting the whole time, our overhead was super low (less than 1/2 of the mortgage/etc we were paying in my old house), heck I bought my first complete/new bike since 1983 (with SRM and everything).

This weekend, racing two fields, two hours of down time in between. I don't think I've done two races in a day with that much time between, I much prefer racing back to back. Any tips?

A race that you won last year, IIRC.

Pfff ... I wish. I did well out there with a 2nd, 4th, 7th, and pack finish. I did win the following week at Modesto though. Signed up for the 3's right now and will probably add the 35+ 123 and possibly the P123 if I'm not totally fried.

Not a bubble at the moment, but most of the activity is still underpinned by crazy low interest rates. My first mortgage was 14.7% so I've seen the worst and the best.

Problem is when rates are 3% it doesn't take much movement in rates to add 50% to a monthly payment. When average prices are, say, $300k, even a one point bump in rates makes stuff instantly unaffordable to a large buyer pool.

I actually sold the giant trampoline in the back yard. I thought I would be stuck with it forever.
Thanks, craigslist.
