The white noise generator often goes off and on on Fridays. I think they must work on it or something. I can't imagine a white noise generator needs much maintenance, but whatever. You don't realize just how loud it is, unless it's been off for a bit. It's jarring how quiet it gets, and then how loud it seems when it comes back on.

Got to race "with" Tilford last night in Dallas. "With" meaning I started the same race. And was in the same peloton, for a while. Anyway, it was cool seeing the legend down at the local 'nighter.

My old office had a white noise machine. They installed it during the new office buildout to drown out the noise created by the "open workspace design" that they forced us into. The machine consisted of several speakers above the ceiling tile that sounded like jet engines. The few with controls for the machine sat further away from the speakers than I did (had one right next to my office), so they'd crank them up and it sounded like an airport most of the day.

White noise scares me.
People that need white noise scare me.
It means they need to drown out voices in their head!!

I have a personal white noise generator on my desk. As an added bonus, it blows air in any direction I point it. Pretty cool the stuff they can do with technology these days.

After being all set to head to philadelphia, I just got into UMass last friday. I thought nothing of it till I got my aid package today.
It'll be 30k cheaper A YEAR.
Omg.
Please tell me Worcester sucks less than I think it does :/

Man, I hate being the one to have to crush people's dreams. I don't know whether every generation gets told that if they dream it hard enough, it'll come true no matter their abilities, but I've had to be the one to break it to so many students this semester that they're not going to be able to get into dental, veterinary, medical, nursing, etc. school because their scores just don't make the cut. I get why people just pass them on to the next class/level and say, "maybe if you do better/work harder in your next class..." I mean it's so much easier. Then they come to me and it's my fault because they're getting a C/D/F in my class (or I just lay out the reality for them that they should look into back up plans even if they're doing OK in my class or not in my class at all but want my help because they need money and are hard workers and "deserve" a chance - all of which I have no control over; I'm a low seniority assistant prof with no voice in any decisions) that they're not going to get into where they want to go, not their performance in all their other classes that led to a 2.5 GPA and a 40th percentile on the standardize test of their choice.
"Maybe if I apply again and you boost me up from a D+ to a C I'll get in next time".
'Sorry, but no, you won't and the semester has been over for two weeks, so I can't change your grade now even if I felt you deserved an extra 7% added to your final grade.'
"Yeah well you're an ******* and it's your fault my grade doesn't represent how hard I worked in your class and you're wrong anyways because all my other professors and high school teachers and my parents think I can be an _______. Why are you stopping me from doing what I NEED to do? There isn't any other option, there's nothing else I can be. I HAVE to be a __________."

No first hand experience, but I can't imagine it sucks $120 more than Philadelphia to live there for 4 years, but other people's standards of living requirements are far different from mine.

Saw the handwriting on the wall, switched to History and ended up going to law school like everybody else. Turned out fine. There are still days when I think I would have enjoyed and been pretty good at medicine, but what are you going to do?

Congrats. I lived south of Worcester for over ten years. We still have friends there. I would move back there in a heartbeat if it made sense, but it doesn't at this stage of my life.

When I see Worcester in print and read it, even in my head I know I have no idea how to pronounce it...

Spawn #1 had an encouraging job interview at vice.com today. They just got another round of funding and the timing is perfect. I'm hoping this is the one for him. Not that I want to see him go.

It still haunts me to this day...
That said I grew up in Key West without AC, so we had fans on all night. It's still hard to sleep without one on!

I've been in NE for almost a decade. I was really hoping that this was my shot to go back to philly where I'd be about 40 mins from my folks. UMass is ranked better than Jeff as well even though it's not a big deal at this point. It's just way too much money to pass up on. Going to talk to Jeff on tuesday, but it looks like they're not going to budge.
I feel like saying that you worked for vice would be a wicked good pick up line.

And as my wife often tells her students, she did not Give them a grade, they Earned that grade. And they aren't being graded on how hard they worked or how hard they tried, but on how well they worked.
I never spent a lot of time in Worcester, but I did got to some fun concerts there.
As a former newspaper reporter and editor, I'll go ahead and suggest he/she start looking for a job outside the industry. And if he/she really wants to be a journalist, he/she should go spend a couple years in a small town in the middle of nowhere. So much fun and crazy crap happens in little towns.
