9 hours? I did a ~10 miles with over 4000 ft on Saturday in about 5. Would have been a bit less but my GF with short legs wasn't having the last 1000 feet which was basically continued 24" step ups.

It's my fault it took so long; gf is a much faster walker than me, a better hiker.
That and we stopped a lot, taking in the scenery, etc.

I second Light and Motion. I have a few of their lights and really like them. The Urban 800 and the VIS 180 are a great start. Great beam patterns and the tail light is super bright.

I think this gets kind of into captain obvious territory. A group of guys who ride at a very high level, all day long, don't want to go hiking afterwards? How revelatory. How many AT thru hikers do you suppose are doing 40 or 50 miles on the bike after a full day of carrying a pack?

No harm in that. I got bored at the slower pace and just powered through a couple sections and waited. Walking slow is more effort than normal pace for me

there was just a great story the other day (can't find it at the moment) on how people keep buying new devices, but they feel they are getting slower. faster device, yes, but running more stuff or more complex stuff = slower UX.

Which is the total opposite approach I have to training for races, so it's kind of a tough switch to make.
Anyway I'm like a cat 4 hiker. I refuse to buy any REI-branded clothing because it seems to Fred, like wearing a Nashbar jersey.
What's the "Fred" equivalent for hikers anyway??

I think that only applies to Android devices. =]

I am also at times conflicted about whether it's really logical to dedicate hours and hours of training for a few glory moments. I'd like to take a motorcycle around the country, but my cycling will suffer. Pretty much anything that takes the slightest commitment seems to interfere with cycling in one way or another.

Sometimes I want to (try to) power through these hikes, because it's not really my jam, but then I realize the whole point of going out there isn't to finish the 'workout', but to enjoy nature and all that.

Some buddies and I would probably be on the other extreme as we'd try to knock out the biggest peak ascents we could in long one day efforts. Required being as minimal and light as possible. We'd bring emergency gear in the event something went awry (which it did from time to time).

Also, I don't have the poles, that is a bit too much for a day hike. However after the "danger noodle" scare as we were walking through some dense brush I felt like a walking stick of some sort would be good to be able to shoo them out from under the bushes I was about to step on/near.

Wait, were you there at Big Basin yesterday?? I swear my boots will be used for a multi-day trip some time, I swear.
