What are they collecting demographics on? Less than half the folks that answer this will attend. CA section 260 something talks about discrimination. They may be providing evidence that they discriminate just by asking (and they have settled for discrimination). So why ask the majority of those that will not attend about something you can only get sued for? As my sister attended, I attended, my nephew attended and my wife was in Admin there - yea - I know how it works. My strange view of the world came from growing up a minority and having a family that is half minority.

Universities contract with the Feds so they're required to track race, gender and ethnicity to meet accountability and reporting standards with EEOC and other.

For sexual orientation their statement is

"Beginning this fall, the University of California will provide students with the option to voluntarily self-identify their sexual orientation and gender identity on the undergraduate admission application to help the university better understand and meet the diverse needs of its students."

Believe it or not.

I am aware of it, I get it, I understand it and I believe it. But there is less than 50% chance these are students (these are applicants) and I do not believe it has no effect on admission. As a white African American voter at the time - I found I could take UC Irvine classes with a C average from a community college. At the time I did not ask why, I didn't even think about it.

California's affirmative action laws changed in 1998.

You're posting screenshots and making an issue of a non-issue. It's no secret. They address it directly on their website. I believe if you scrolled up one line in your screenshot there the words "the following questions are" would appear, to boot.

No University is going to risk the ****storm to discriminate on gender or sexual orientation.

My sense is that colleges use applicants' demographic info to figure out how to do a better job in attracting a diverse group of applicants. Seriously! I was a university attorney for many years, and the administration was very keen on trying to figure out how to encourage various demographic groups to apply. This was not mere salesmanship, but also figuring out ways to improve educational offerings for those groups. Not an easy task, but one that IMO was worth doing.

I am a Cal grad, quite a few years ago, but post-Bakke. I found out after the fact that the single greatest diversity boost in my favor was the fact that I came from a rural high school. And those kids continue to be under-represented, so I imagine the preference still exists.

So, last night we saw that the Peanuts Christmas Special was on, so - what the heck - we tuned in. I hadn't seen it since I was very little and basically didn't remember a thing. Holy cow, 50 years on and this thing really holds up amazingly well. And it's actually funny, too. "Well, what do you really want for Christmas, Lucy?" "Real estate." Love it.

Speaking of xmas specials, my 4 year old has an obsession with an amazon prime compilation of xmas shorts from what I think are largely from the 30's and 40's. There's one short that's particularly uncomfortable for us, depicting ethnically diverse kids who are trying to do something nice for Santa, but resorts to using racial/ethnic stereotypes of the day. Other stuff is pretty fascinating as there's an overall tone of the great depression, def a good reminder of how good many of us have it today compared to that era.

I can play about half of the Vince Guaraldi soundtrack, including:

Christmas Time is Here
Linus and Lucy
O Tannenbaum
What Child is this/Greensleeves.

I've been meaning to learn the cute little chorded, descending arpeggios of "Skating":

Bummer. I hear that people who park diagonally get keyed as payback. Not a nice thing to do though.
