Sagan for President! (and World Champ)
Watched the last 40k, but the last 5k was where the action was.
Great reduced-field sprint. Bike racing y'all.

It was a much better race than what I was expecting.
Not a hint of doubt as to who was the best rider this year. Fully deserved stripes.

I was hoping someone unknown - like the Canadian guy sitting on the back, or the Nederlander(?) guy otf in the last 2k, or even the Eritrean(?) - would take it, but The Establishment was having none of it.
And was Cav pissed at his leadout guy? It seemed like he was looking for someone to blame at the finish, but it seemed like he had only himself to blame..

The VeloNews article has Cav blaming his choice of which way to try to go around Sagan. He chose...poorly.

Cav was pissed that he lost and couldn't bring himself to say he got beat. Elected to say Matthews blocked his route, Blythe did something else, Cav crashed earlier in the week, and so on.

On the one hand, he did have to wind up twice and even stopped pedaling for a second. On the other hand, you really don't get to say that you were definitely going to beat Sagan...

I haven't ever contested a Worlds ever but I've been in sprints where I felt awesome, uncorked a phenomenal sprint, but because of some stupid tactical move on my part I ended up not doing well at all.
I'm a Cav fan so I'll say that first. But I think he knew he had it in his legs, more so than say his desperate Milan San Remo win, and he outsmarted himself in the sprint. I think he'll be reliving that sprint for a long, long time. He chose to go with Sagan, second guessed himself, took the low risk line to the left, ended up boxed in, and lost the sprint.
Cav read the moves right all day, he had the legs, and he didn't win. I'd be mad at myself too.

I only saw this clip later but wow, the splits 80km into the race...

Cav working. I think it was Caleb was one of the guys losing the wheel.
70-75 kph. 43-46 mph.
43-46 mph!

That split pretty much made the race. Well that and the Belgians shutting down any attempt at a chase to bring back the leaders during the circuits.

It's easy to see in retrospect but imagine being there at that moment. It reminds me of that stage in the Tour where Cav barely made it into the front group in the crosswinds, and in fact I think he was the last one on after Kwiakowski did a massive effort to get him into the group, so big that Kwiakowski blew making the move. Then Bennati did some insane 1 km pull, and suddenly a group (including Sagan) were away. Froome looked around, got on the radio, and although his team chased like mad, lost a bunch of time (for a flat stage).

When I was watching the clip I was really curious how the split happened. You can see Caleb just withering. They were flat out and just dying trying to stay on wheels. Cav looked supremely comfortable, pulling through, looking around, assessing the situation. I didn't see Sagan latch on but he said in interviews he was the last one on. Also I missed Greipel because I was so focused on Caleb.
When I raced in Belgium we had to race the elite category, basically Cat 1s. Guys that won would literally get a pro contract that week and not return. The racing was absolutely insane. In my first race my teammate and I both got shelled in less than 5km. At dinner my mom (my parents lived in Belgium at the time) asked how it was. I told her it was totally insane, we were going 35 mph or something. My teammate shot a look at me, told me not to exaggerate. I went and got my computer. 70 kph, 43 mph. And this was a flat course!

On the one hand, it looks like "why not just close the gap when they're right there?"
Then you remember how hard it is to close gaps at high speed... if they pros can't do it, you know it's hard. Then again, some of them at the front of the peloton might have sat up on purpose to let that gap grow.

And Terpstra made the split https://www.strava.com/activities/746744475/overview
Based on the video and the Strava file, and the weather report, the key section was the short eastbound "top" of the course, and the move that happened was a tailwind corner gap. The pack is drawn out in a straight line.
The crosswinds happened after the next turn (the video ends there). That's when the real echelons show up.

Can't believe no one is talking about the UCI World Championships in Artistic Cycling (https://www.facebook.com/UnionCyclist...76211359208256).

I couldn't watch it as we were visiting family. Passed the course on the way home while they were cleaning up. Steven is one of our Wednesday night hammer fest crew. It's great to see him win a big one.

A local guy took third in the 50-55 masters. Not surprising, as the guy is super strong and has been focusing on cross the last few years. Usually cleans up when he shows up to the club races
