My wife is from Lincoln, so we're out quite a bit, but this time for a family wedding. I may rent a road bike to get in a ride, because I'd hate to have to go to a spin place.

Or maybe, since it sounds like he wants to hire a coach, he should hire a coach and evaluate what that does for him. "I am successful, therefore successful people will do what I did," is a fallacy. Even if there are superficial similarities in situations for you and him. I did pretty well as a Collegiate D and C racer myself (never technically raced as a 5). Getting a (good) coach has nonetheless been beneficial.

I was fortunate enough to win a month of coaching at a race last season from a local reputable coach. I used it and learned quite a bit about training and racing. I also learned that a structured coaching plan would not work for me.
I have friends who thrive on structure, having an exact workout and being accountable to a coach. That is not me. I prefer a more laid back approach and I do a lot of group rides which are not always compatible with an interval or Z2 workout.
I've done OK on my own. I do ask questions and pay attention to what successful riders are doing.
No matter if you get a coach or not, keep in mind it's not always the fittest rider, the guy with the highest FTP or the best sprinter that wins the race. Learning how to race well comes from experience in actual races and learning from lots of mistakes! Cheers!

I worked with a coach for a couple of seasons who built a couple of the group rides into my program. He was a long time local racer and understood the dynamics of each ride, and I would get specific instructions for each ride.

^Likewise ... i'm not missing the group rides I want to hit. We just work some key things into the rides (e.g., attack like a maniac through these sections).

Exactly. A good coach will work the local group rides you want to do into the plan. And how you ride the group ride ( sit in, pull, attack) depends on how it fits in the overall plan.
And I may have to intervals before or after the group ride. All depends on where we're at in the plan, and what the goals are.
local group rides are one training opportunity. I wouldn't work with a coach who told me not to do any of them.

if u can see the forrest for the trees then, self coach.
if u need accountability, and dont have time to research or put together your plan, then get a coach. Cuts out alot of the guess work, kinda.
good articles and plans aren't too difficult to find online on forums. Im not a gift to cycling by any means, but i've self coached and made it to cat 1 or whatever.
