My experience there is the 3's race faster but it's because the 1/2/3 field is much smaller, the race is more tactics based, and the attacks are much harder so things split up.

Yes, the cat 3s Sunday put up the fastest lap of the day, of all time actually. It's not that crazy. There were probably also 50 fewer attacks in that race than in the masters or pro race.

Edit: here is the winning ride and here is 2nd place in the 123 Sunday. Those guys are Rockleigh regulars, I think they were in a 3 man break for most of the race.

I've raced in Tennessee, the lower Southeast (minus Florida) and the Northeast. Tennessee is easier to get results in, but probably only because field sizes are smaller. Expand the circle to Georgia and Alabama and it starts looking more like NE racing in terms of field size and depth. What varies more noticeably between places I've raced is average pack-riding proficiency. It's lower in TN and AL, higher in NE and GA. Again, I think a function of typical field sizes. It's all still bike racing. I imagine that the west coast is a lot like the east coast. Now, Colorado on the other hand... everyone knows a Colorado Cat 3 is a Cat 1 everywhere else .

I don't really see the latest data as much of an East/West beef. No one was trying to brag on the power numbers. It's just a fact of the matter that putting down that level of wattage was necessary to keep up and clearly a lot of guys were able to do it. The lowest I've seen quoted for the climbs at the beginning of Hilltowns by someone who went over in the front group was 5.4w/kg, so there's margin for error based on how the climbs were ridden or power meter calibration or bike weight or what have you. I know TKP and I both probably gave ourselves more work than strictly necessary. If we were hitting those climbs after an hour of racing instead of 8 minutes, probably no one would have much to say about it because the power would've been relatively unimpressive.

I take offense to this. i'm fine with the barbarian part, but not all of us are in on this particular onslaught.

Are you suggesting that TKP practice more cyclistical correctness when composing his posts?

on second thought, i'd rather californians be called scoundrels and not barbarians. also this particular mini-conversation lost me at first mention of e-wang

He can win 35+123s right now. i'm not sure what he is doing in that category...in fact i can think of 8 or 9 guys that shouldnt be there. He's gotta be the hot favorite for San Rafael this week.
He and the red helmeted Mikes guy (don't know his name) were my main two to watch.

I'll edit the post to say scoundrels, or even yellow journalists, if you'd like.

I'm here now, but have little to contribute. I said it before, all my empirical evidence points to either W being too high, KG being too low, or CDA out there is different than it is here. It's probably all the 6lb wheelsets.

When I raced in South Dakota I was really weirded out because all the cyclists there speak only in Nickelback lyrics, and when I asked one of them why he said "Prima Donna not this one so I guess she’ll get it; work my kisses, work my britches", which I took to mean that it helps with sprinting.

Your raw watts are crazy ridiculous is the thing, when you are solo and on flattish ground or are trading punches with other watt monsters on rolling terrain and you aren't going up anything with steep sustained climbing, that makes a really big difference. You also seem to have natural tactical savvy about you. FWIW the last ~13min of the 3/4 lime rock race my AP was 320W and my NP was 362. 320W is 4.4 for me whereas it's 3.9 for you, and CdA doesn't offset that difference unless you're built like Jesse Ventura.

your raw watts are not that different than mine.

but anyway, the last 12min for me on the race I won saturday were more than that. https://www.cyclinganalytics.com/rid...#34m33s-46m34s - I think it's public and you can see that. Avg power was like 395/np405. But the "jump" to get clear was only 660 for 30s; hardly impressive in w/kg.

Funny ... in my race on Sunday, my last 13 min were AP 325 and NP 365 which are just about 3.9 (AP w/kg) for me.
