out walking the earth
I didn't know masters nationals were still in Utah. Which was sort of the original point..I don't know a lot of east coast guys who went to nationals the last several years. Couple air travel with the fact they they stick them the first week of school and I'll wait until they come east again.

finished 4th out of 8 lol for our championship thing. Was happy with my final time and first 40km done. Captain obvious, super hard! Like everyone , i wish i could have a better position, and more watts, etc etc but glad i didn't quite implode and drained the tank completely! I was faffing around with my position in the week leading up to the race and probably could have done more riding with my skin suit, helmet, and stuff in the heat. SOK.

But I was talking about the more important Nationals, elite nationals. Masters nationals gives out about one million and one jerseys - so many age group combos my head spins.
And yes elite nats was out here this year, but was in WI last year - and Norcal won the crit! =] (both elite & u23)

There are not too many clean 48 year old riders capable of winning a jersey at Elite Nationals. More important to you because you could win at both.

out walking the earth
It's been a while for me. With the knowledge that I desperately needed a win I figured I'd head north and see if I could pull a rabbit out of the hat. I headed up the thruway yesterday afternoon the exercise demons: I was in search of globalcanvas' wagging finger little girl, and a snapping turtle. I was going to race these two across the road, and if it turned into a game of frogger gone awry so be it. Downloading data now…a fuller report later.
a loss to a trash talking turtle
and a know it all little girl

Maumee Valley Wheelmen #13 Woodville Road Race - B's

The last time I we raced here I did way too much work and got myself dropped on the third lap. I did a lot of work at the front, responding to the little attacks and then going for, and winning, the beer prime at the end of lap 2..that did me in and I started opening gaps in corners that I ended up not being able to close..
I told myself I wouldnt do that this time. We always start this race with a neutral start to the first corner. Ive always thought this meant the first corner that we pass that is the actual first corner after the start finish, not the first turn after we start...which I guess could be considered the first corner. I was on the front in the neutral section, and when we hit the 3 way intersection another guy ive raced with a few times outside of the club races comes by and tells me to jump on..so I did. We drill it at the start of the race, hit the first turn, and see everyone way back..we look at each and decide to just keep going. We stayed away for a little bit but with the only 2 of us, and how open this course is to the wind, it wasnt for too long..
The next lap and half I float around the group (15 or so when we started) responding at the front when I felt like giving a little effort knowing that no one in this group would stay away. End of the 2nd lap, we usually have a prime..which I won and blew up on last time..but for some reason we didnt this time. Some guys still sprinted like there was sprint points on the line and I had to force myself to ignore it and let them kill themselves out there.
Third lap, im still towards the front half (probably 9 guys at the point) for most of the lap, but at times I drift back and try to sit out of the wind to recover a little. Coming into the last 2 turns on this course I was on the front and I realized no one wanted to come around...so I dialed it way back. I looked at my computer and I was only doing like 18-19mph and maybe 200 watts. Since no one wanted to come around I just figured I would see how long I could keep this up for. Seemed like forever. Finally a couple guys came around and we were racing again.
Last lap, im still moving around the group a little, and I figured I needed to stay in a good position to do as little as posisble..at this point the back of the group I figured was ok to sit in at. Being the last lap, a couple guys were giving some half assed attacks, only to be reeled back in pretty quickly. I made sure to keep an eye on a couple of the guys who I thought might have a chance at staying away..they werent doing anything so I was good to go. Going into the final turn I was on the front again, doing like 19mph, wondering how long this would keep up..finally 3 guys jumped around me, and I jumped to stay on their wheels.
About 3/4 of a mile from the finish, a couple guys ended up on either side of me and I figured I was going to be boxed in for the sprint and almost accepted the fact that I was screwed for the finish. Finally, one guy went on my right and I jumped on his wheel. One other guy got in front of me, which I was fine with, and I just waited until a good time to go..then I went for it. Wasnt a cdr epic sprint, but it was enough to get/stay away.
I kind of looked under my shoulder and saw no one in behind me, so I sat down ( still hammering/hurting/sprinting) then looked back right before the finish. I was able to kind of coast over the line and throw my arm up..FOR THE WIN.
That **** hurt
I've known all year that ive had the fitness to be competitive in the B's, but something has always happened, whether it just be terrible positioning coming into the final stretch or my leg hurting...finally I was able to play it smart and actually put the work I've done this year to use.
Ive won 2 of the club TT's this year in the B group, but this was way more satisfying

Just upgraded to cat 3 on track and did my first 1/2/3 race tonight at Hellyer. Wow. That kicked my ass, I made a stupid, and still got on the 5 man podium due to the same few guys taking all the top 3 places.
20 lap scratch, wasn't gonna be aggressive, didn't attack once but did end up in almost all the break attempts so I guess I was too aggressive. Blew up with 5 to go, dangled for a couple laps and then popped off the back.
66 lap points, sprints every 6 (2k). That may be the most burning my legs have ever felt. Lost the main pack with 24 remaining, worked with 1 & 2 others for 16 laps and caught back on. No points.
Elimination was great for a while, did a good job of keeping someone boxed in each lap until 4 of us remained. Then the guy I was boxing in found a gap when the guy in front surged and all 4 of us sprinted. I lost, and didn't register the announcer telling us pack is safe (guy was off the back) until it was too late and I had pulled myself. Doh! But got a couple points for 4th which somehow put me in 5th for the night (I guess last race breaks a tie).

screwed up the TT -- paced it very well given the power i had, but power was just sub-par. (i'm reminded of the dumb paul/phil quote: "legs to engine room--need more power.")
anyway, it was super liberating as i didn't have to worry about 'protecting' a 10th GC position (i.e., finish with the lead group in this RR)--i could just race how i wanted.
a friend came up to me in the parking lot and said he was going to go for something big...would i be up for it? yeah, sure...everyone talks a big game in the parking lot.
we roll-out about 1/2 mile. one of the guys i know asks "are we neutral?" someone grunted, "no."
guy i know shouts "YOLO!" and takes off. i follow, as do a few i know. totally cheesy but i laughed and just went without thinking further.
we grow a gap to 1' in the first 20 (6 riders...i'm working overtime to establish), then down to ~30". 1 guy is not working at all. another 3 stop. me + my buddy drive it back up to >1 minute, and 2 start working. we lose a few, gain 1 bridger.
i was in the break for ~92 miles. unfortunately the race was 97 miles. i was the last to get caught. even when the pack was just 20" behind i surged--sometimes a group hesitates. no dice. hung with the pack as it went by and thought it was weird that i was not immediately passed....maybe i didn't work hard enough? when the road tipped up i was spit out. yep...worked appropriately hard.
somehow managed to finish ~40th out of 90+, so i guess it was hard all around.
stoked to have raced aggressively vs sat in only to get outsprinted by a junior and same time (which would mean i would STILL be nowhere in GC).
more fun to come in stages 3 & 4.

Raced the cat 3 Utah state champs today (I'm not a Utah resident). The race was 8 laps with half up hill and half a shallow descent. Long story short, I made the front group on the 3rd lap and then got dumped on the 4th. I'm not entirely sure what happened.
In looking at the data, my NP was about 10w less than FTP for the first 1:10, so that probably was a big factor. More than anything I'm pissed to get dropped in a cat 3 race. I've got it in my head that if I'd like to be a 2 I should be able to hang with any 3 group. Just set a PB in a 20 minute test but this is only the 2nd full length weekend race I've done this year, and I'm thinking my race legs are lacking.
I've got an A race in a week that I'm supposed to be peaking for but I don't feel very peak-y.

San Rafael Sunset Crit - 35+.
1k course with a little elevation on half of it. No issue with the crowd or the course, tried to get clear a few times but ultimately it was too animated and TMB was content with letting Dana beat everyone in a sprint, which he did. I finished 9th of 30+ guys in the 35+. Probably lke 15th overall, but the BAR points go by the 35+. 6 more, hoping for better luck tomorrow.
I had 2 teammates in 35s today who both got dropped pretty much immediately. The team situation is a little bleak.
