There's a skills clinic being run by some of the KHS riders (Brian and Joy McCulloch) out here in Redlands. While Brian may not win a ton of races, he's probably their captain and one of the more skilled riders out there. Joy has been coaching for a few years and knows her stuff.

17-18 ITT - 1st and repeat (last time was 15-16) SoCal District Champion.
Pretty happy with it. Far less than ideal conditions. While not excessive for out there this was the windiest we've experienced in about 8 trips. Maybe steady 20mph wind. The return leg could have sustained 38ish mph with big gears, but not on a 14T. He averaged 28mph. I was hoping for a 30+ average before sickness in still conditions.

Team got 1-4th. This is getting a bit silly.

We bagged Barry Wolf. AM HR elevated and the TT HR was low indicating the sickness is not all gone.

@TMonk did you race Carlsbad in the 3's? One of our teammates got punched during the race and I was wondering if you saw anything

I sure did - I heard him talking about it after. Guy with the Don's Bikes kit?

That's shady! I felt like it was an otherwise safe, respectful race.

I'm going to be in Irvine on March 14-15th on business, with evenings free. Does anyone know of any races or training crits on those dates?

The Tues night Great Park race I have not seen this season. Look for it. Racing on a runway...

There is a fast training ride "The Market Ride" in San Clemente (our town) Tues evening that goes S along old Hwy 101 (closed to cars) along the ocean, through the marine base, however there has been talk of the base being closed to cyclists. This is a moody cult ride. It can be VERY fast, or just weird, it depends. Typically there is a lot of crazy (guys that don't buy cars, ride 400+ miles a week, hammer like crazy and never race, but can hold 30+ until they fall over sideways into someone - like my wife and put her in the hospital...) going on early March. It will start just after Daylight Savings time 5:00PM.
This is without question the most scenic - if you like the Pacific Ocean. It is also the most unique. Unless you must get in certain TSS numbers, this would be my first suggestion although lots of caveats. If you do this - PM me and I'll get you more info and maybe get my kid to do it.

Wed AM it may be worth the drive to Carlsbad and pick up the Tri ride (no tri bars) that comes through the base again, going north to San Clemente, turns around and goes home. You may meet some cycling celebrity this time of year.

In Irvine there is the Sky Park circle (I think Wed - check) that goes round and round and round....in a business park. I think it still goes on although I have not done it since 1990 something - but 28mph ave fast. I was/am big so that to me was just Boorring.

Drive a bit - Starting March 15: https://www.facebook.com/Eldo-Race-S...5858173166702/

This Omnium is the weekend before: https://socalcycling.com/RaceAnn/2016/tdm.pdf
Uphill TT in the dirt. Slight advantage to TT bike as the flat pavement before the hill, but not much. Nice crit, flat rolling CR (RR).
But you can do just one or all.

Great info, thanks! The Tuesday night race looks promising. Just gotta figure out where to rent a bike, if it's worth the logistical headache.

Puppy number 148. Got his age wrong - and name. I believe he is the youngest in this 248 rider field.
His new teammate won the San Dimas SR RR,
His old (and future) got 2nd GC.

Got a buddy in SoCal right now who is thinking of doing the Sunday San Marcos crit. He's got to break away from some family stuff to do it. Can anyone tell me anything about the race -- the course, the racers, how it plays out? He'd be racing the 3s. I didn't check, but he said reg was pretty light as of a day or 2 ago. Par for the course with pre-reg in SoCal at this time of year, or a sign that actual numbers will be light due to other events?

Here's a link to the flyer on the USAC site.

Course is for the fit. See 1st video - junior races, but you get an idea of the course. We try not to miss it. Local great race used more for training and fun. Puppy climbing Half Dome today, so if he doesn't die, he will race it Sunday ... P12.

I'm going to be moving down to San Diego in October, probably somewhere between San Marcos & Poway. Can anyone recommend any good group rides that start around there (or reasonable cycling distance from there)? Looking to get some off-season base miles in and also a chance to chat with the local racers to find a team for 2017. Thanks!

Sunday - Rodger Cup was won by Geoffery Curran.
What a classic. Going on since 1976. No rules - just honor. It would not surprise me if this is up there with his U23 National Win.

Search Facebook - you will find it.

Good read. I lived on that course and road it 2-3 days a week early 80s. It makes me sad and was my son's 1st big Cat 3 RR win.

Anyway that promoter (and others) and UCSD was under a lot of social (no idea about the UCSD regents) pressure to offer equal opportunity for each group and equal purses for non collegiate. In 2015 The promoter was applauded for offering the same $1,000 purse for women as men.
For example 2016:
Masters Women 35+ Cat 1234 - 1 Rider. I believe (or it was) same purse as men.

There were some hot debates and negative things said about promoters that canceled the races of smaller fields. I think it is easier for the UCSD college kids to just cancel the race. The Muretta promoter had similar issues and just canceled the small fields and got called names. But they still have a race.
