Before AMTRAK discontinued much of its bike transportation here in the northeast I used to take the "Vermonter" from Hartford CT to Amherst MA with my bicycle and ride back home, a trip of approx. 65 miles by bike. And of those 65 miles, only about 10 of them were on numbered routes. Very rural and scenic. Now that AMTRAK has changed its policy, it now forces me to make this a two day venture. I drive to Amherst with the bike on top of the car, leave the car there, and ride back home. Then, day two, take the train back to Amherst to pick-up the car. Still a fun trip, but have to depend on the car.
