Sadly, I can not eat one or two pieces of candy. I have to avoid it completely. I can look at it and ignore it, but one piece in my mouth and Katey bar the door. I'm a binge eater and sweets are my downfall. So, I too see it as a slippery slope...
I generaly use gel packs or energy bars, if necessary.
