Those are sealed bearing units that are pressed into your bike's bottom bracket shell. You'll never see any individual ball bearings. Once you get the spindle out you need to run a drift through from the opposite side and gradually tap out the bearing. That gold colored thing in the picture is a tube that won't come out when you pull the spindle. You might have to push it to one side to get at the opposite bearing.

When it comes time to put it back together I put all of the parts in the freezer for a couple of hours to make them shrink a bit. Take the bearings out of the freezer and press them onto the bike then take the spindle out of the freezer and press it through the bearings. People who have never worked on BMX bikes won't have a clue what I'm talking about.
