A gun would probably not helped him out at all. The nature of the mountain lion is to stalk and attack from a position of opportunity. I would wager the cat had him before he knew what was happening.
This is not all that atypical for the western states. (Well, the attack was.) We have sightings all the time here in Montana. This week in Helena, MT there was one that came into town and was spotted near one of the elementary schools.
