Double or triple crank for big folks?

As I mentioned in another post, I am in training to do the Century around Tahoe in June with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training.

That ride goes from 5000 feet to 7100 feet during the ride, with, I understand, some pretty good hill work.

I am heavily leaning toward buying a used Calfee Tetra Pro, all carbon framed bike.

I weight 270 now and am about 6' even.

Some of my larger, and more experienced team mates are firm in their belief that a guy my size need a triple chain ring for the climbs in the ride.

As you might have guessed, the Calfee I have my heart set on is a double chain ring. It has a 9 gear rear, while my current bike has only seven.

What say you?
