My experience has been that mysterious "ticks" and creaks coming from the crank area is often a result of the bottom bracket/bottom bracket shell interface. Try removing the bottom bracket and re-greasing the threads. If that doesn't do it, use some teflon plumber's tape on the threads, that sometimes works when just re-greasing doesn't-
