If not bibs, eight panel shorts are a must.
In my younger (and lighter) years I rode wearing any old bargain bin shorts. The LBS had end of season factory 2nds from Cannondale, and most of my shorts were thin 6 panel jobs. They fit fine.
Now i'm pushin' 30 and have a 36" to 38" waist. Eight panel shorts are the way to go.
