Frankly, even though the bike may not be worth what you would pay new, I would rather do that than dump effort into an old used one. At least your friend would have new crap instead of old crap.

You sound like you want to help your friend at your own time and expense, so I don't want to minimize that, but it would only take a little more monetary commitment and a lot less of your time to give a new cheap bike instead of polishing a turd
