Do what I do and take the bus or whatever transit system your place have. If you don't have one or don't trust it, Call for a taxi. I usually have somebody calls for a taxi if I end up shopping late and request for a VAN (so the bike can fit in the back).

The cost of these things are still a lot less than the cost of using a car. I'm currently car-free for the last half-year and have only started biking in the last 2 months. Jeez, I should have had started a long time ago and looked for a better bike when I had the money then.
