I run a singleator on my SS MTB and I don't notice any noise at all. If you can get your chainline nice and straight, you should be quiet. I have the push up spring in mine so I can run a short chain and I think it looks better than having it pushing down with a big loop at the back.

Go for the BMX chainring bolts, only about 10-15 bucks and no chance for them coming loose from using a cobbled up mess with washers.
