If you aren't a really efficient messenger and a very fast cyclist overall, you won't qualify. Think of your finishes in local alley cats (NYC is more competitive) and if you aren't consistently in the top 10, then you aren't fast. If you haven't ever worked as a messenger (pretty much the position I'm in) then you stand little chance. The messengers that come to these events are in it for the glory, not to eff around. They are good at what they do and qualify with ease. The real tester for everyone is the finals...3 hours sucks for anyone, efficient messenger or not.
