Mountain hubs are not really different than road hubs in regard to chainline. I intermix many road and MTB parts on various bikes. I think Sheldon summed it up very well. He says that what is now called MTB parts is a marketing ploy more than anything else. They used to be called touring parts as they could handle a wider range of gears than "road" parts.
